LA VERNIA -- The state-ranked Lady Bear volleyball team continues to live up to its billing, and swiftly handled business in La Vernia last Tuesday.

The Lady Bears hosted a dual match Aug. 28, in which McCollum and Canyon Lake drove into town. La Vernia didn’t play around with either team, earning straight-sets victories, and then sending their visitors home as quickly as they arrived.

In the match with McCollum, the Lady Bears maintained a steady lead en route to a 25-15 win in game one, and then took game two by the score of 25-20. A bit of fire was lit under the Lady Bears before game three, and the home team dominated the third game of the match, taking the victory by the final score of 25-5.

Although Canyon Lake didn’t fare much better during its first game with La Vernia, falling 25-9, the Lady Hawks fought back well during the second and third games of the match. Still, La Vernia locked up the wins at 25-21 and 25-17.

Valarie Moehrig and Brittani Dear led the offense against Canyon Lake with 10 kills apiece. Brooke Haliscak was close behind with 9 kills, and Sara Hill had another 4. Morgan Mills had 22 assists, and Morgan Mikes accounted for 9.

Dear also had a strong defensive showing with 6 digs, followed by Moehrig with 4, and Karaline Campbell and Mariel McFadin with 3 each. Hill added 2 blocks to the stat sheet, Moehrig had one solo block, and combined with Dear for another.

“The girls are starting to trust each other -- that is why I think we are doing well,” Head Coach Theresa Reyes said. “They are learning from mistakes made and help others through their mistakes. They are starting to play together.”

The Lady Bears then made a trip to San Marcos later in the week to compete in tournament play, and swept their pool-play matches Aug. 30 to earn a spot in the gold bracket on Sept. 1. Unfortunately, complete tournament results were unavailable as of press time.
