SAN ANTONIO -- For Floresville Head Coach Jeff Luna, Friday’s 17-0 win against the Highlands Owls was extra special.

“This is my first win here,” Luna said. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this. Our team came together and ready to play. We have a good group of players here and have the potential to be something special.”

It was all Tigers the entire night as the Owls attempted to find an answer for the brutal ground and pound game led by junior running back Hector Villegas.

Villegas led the offense with 32 carries for 164 yards and one touchdown. The rushing game was also bolstered by Ruben Benavides, who carried the ball 17 times for 82 yards.

As solid as the offense was, it was Floresville’s defense which shut down the Owls. Only once in the second quarter did Highlands appear to successfully move the ball, but senior cornerback Trey Gillis halted any momentum as he picked off a pass from Highlands’ Jordan De Luna.

The Tiger defense was successful at keeping the Owls off the scoreboard the entire game.

“They are a good football team,” Luna said. “We came out and did what we thought was going to be successful and it worked. We still have a long way to go and we have to correct some mistakes, but overall it was a good win for us.”
