The La Vernia Independent School District’s Safety and Security Patrol and Response Team are the first responders to all school-related incidents within the district, synchronized by Tommy Terry, the emergency management coordinator.

The group is comprised of a multi-faceted team that all hold several positions with the school district, including school nurses, maintenance staff, and custodians. “We take the safety of our students very seriously,” said Terry, taking the time to explain the many services the group provides every day.

An Emergency Operations Plan has been formulated, along with preparation forecasting and provisions in the event they are needed. In the spring, 12 additional people were certified in First Aid and AED Use during a training made possible by the La Vernia Lions Club and several community members.

All coaches, bus drivers, and many of the staff now hold these certifications to ensure the safety of the students within our schools. Many on- and off-site trainings and seminars are scheduled throughout the school year, as well as during the summer; watch for the notification signs to inform our community that it is simply an exercise.

Not only does this department bring a helping hand to those in need, they also provide peace of mind to community members and parents throughout the district.
