Letter: Don’t make final judgments after the first half of the game

Re: “Moving America forward -- from past sins of slavery,” Sept. 5

Just the title would cause any thinking mind to wonder what that means. It implies that we are at some momentous point in time where, all of a sudden, America is exonerated for what we did or didn’t do regarding slavery and all that goes with that. Just what is it that brings us to that?

Best as I can tell, the writer is saying that the absolver here is the election of a black president. What bothers me here are the implications left in the message. The writer goes on to say, “Now that Americans have been absolved by electing their first black president, we can move on with making this country the great country that it once was. ... ” Who made the writer the “absolver”? What does the writer mean, “Now ... we can move on with making this country ... great”? I believe we are doing this now.

Based on my many years of working on the business of inclusiveness and assimilation, I have to wonder if what is being said here is “now that we have done the token thing, let’s get back to making our country great again.” Our country is great now. A good part of keeping it that way is due to the bold and sound decisions made by our current leader. I am reminded of a supervisor I had many years ago who would admonish me with, “Quit hiring minorities and get me some qualified people.”

As to the first part of the article. First, you don’t make final judgments after the first half of a game. How do these judgments measure up after the Democrats have had their shot? Also, the psychoanalysis of President Obama’s makeup was a bit too much for me. Since when do we hold overcoming adversity and obstacles in achieving success (and he has and how!) against a person? By what measuring stick can one say that Obama does not possess the “work harder, sacrifice, and do without” character? Giving up high pay to pursue social service endeavors and working for others certainly speaks for the opposite.

Diversity in life experiences is what makes America great. Probably the most provoking assertions are those that he has a “crippled” (my word) sense of family relationships and love. Wow! Who can project a better image of family than the first family? Did you watch the Democratic Convention?

Lastly, in the dedication to his book, The Audacity of Hope, he says, “to my mother whose loving spirit sustains me still.” How can that translate to “the love (for his mother) is not apparent in his actions”? What actions?

I don't need to be absolved of one damn thing. I never owned a slave and really could care less about any acts that my ancestors committed. If the black, Indian, or any other ethnic group wants to wallow in self induced ... More ›
