Fellow Texans — Did You Know?
September 12, 2012 | 929 views | 3 comments

Did you know that the financial security of the men and women that teach or taught your children and grandchildren is being threatened by special-interest groups in Austin?

The Teacher Retirement System (TRS) provides a lifetime security and serves a vital role to over 1.3 million Texans, both retired and active, and to their families in the education work force.

Special-interest groups are growing in numbers, influence, and resources, and they have different versions of how they want the Texas Legislature to implement plans on doing away with our Teacher Retirement plan and replace it with something totally different with far fewer benefits for all school personnel.

These groups are made up of investment groups, lawyers, and retired legislators, and greed is what motivates them. They are attacking TRS and trying to destabilize it with their lies and misleading information. It is critical that all tax-paying citizens of Texas know the facts from fiction. Education is everyone’s business because our children and grandchildren are directly involved.

Fellow Texans, most teachers choose education because they love children and the art of teaching. Our good retirement program is an incentive to bring good new teachers into the profession. Certainly, the salary is not the attraction!

My purpose in writing is to bring to light facts about the teaching profession and education in general, and a little of the political arena that we educators face with the 83rd Legislative Session which starts January 2013.

There are many retired teachers and school personnel in our area that are contributing in different ways to making this a better community, and their lives will be affected by decisions in Austin.

Pris Kincaid is a retired Texas educator who lives in Wilson County.

Well how about vouchers for all students so they can choose the best schools. How about no teachers union so the best teachers can be rewarded and bad teachers fired. How about teaching meaningful courses and not feel-good ... More ›
