Q: What’s surprised you about this new season, launching Friday, Sept. 14?

A: The deals are better. They’re more expensive; they’re more interesting. Particularly, the entrepreneurs are more prepared. They’re not surprised by anything. They come in with a strategy -- how they value their companies, how they interact with us, how they negotiate, how they counteroffer. I can’t pull my old tricks anymore.

Q: What have you learned?

A: That the American dream is alive and well.

Q: How do you feel about the concept that business owners shouldn’t take credit for what they’ve built?

A: It goes both ways. You’ve got to have help, but at the same time, it comes down to good old American sweat and effort and brainpower. It’s great to see the American dream is alive and well. I love, love, love being able to participate. When I buy a company or invest in a company, it gives me a chance to help people achieve their dreams.

It creates jobs; it creates opportunity. This makes me feel like a part of the solution, and it feels good.

I’m a big believer that, other than serving in the military, the most patriotic thing you can do is get dirty, stinking, filthy rich. You’ll hire people; you’ll pay a ton of taxes; you can help other people go into business.

Q: After all, how many suits can one man wear?

A: Trust me, the only suits I own, you’ll see on this show. I’m not the suit dude at all.
