La Vernia’s first annual Meet the Bears celebration, held Sept. 5 at the La Vernia Independent School District football field, had an overwhelming turnout! Flyers were posted at every campus in the district inviting all students and community members to come and “kick off” the fall sports season together.

Greg Simmons, the sportscaster for KSAT-12 in San Antonio, was the master of ceremonies, and did a phenomenal job of conducting the celebration. The La Vernia Sports Association organized the event, introducing all fall sports team representatives from grades seven through 12. The following teams and organizations were recognized: football, volleyball, cross country, fall tennis, cheerleaders, the Honey Bear dance team, color guard, the Mighty Bear Band, LV flag runners, and the Bear mascots.

LVISD would like to thank everyone who made this event such a successful one. Special thanks go out to the La Vernia Police Department, KSAT-12 and Greg Simmons, the La Vernia Sports Association, all coaches and sponsors, and our amazing community members who came out to support our kids. We are looking forward to a wonderful year. Go Bears!
