Town East Eagles earn second victory in abbreviated contest
Town East 64
Christian Academy 18
The Town East Eagles played the Christian Academy of San Antonio (CASA) Rams last Friday night and continued their early-season offensive explosion. The Eagles ended the game by the 45-point mercy rule with a convincing 64-18 victory. With the win, Town East’s record climbs to 2-0, while CASA falls to 0-2 on the year.
The Rams won the opening flip and chose to receive the ball. Town East was able to hold CASA to only one first down before the Rams turned the ball over on downs. It took the Eagle offense just one play to find the end zone as Dante Johnson took a pitch and rambled down the right sideline for a 30-yard touchdown. Tyler Smith kicked the point after to make it 8-0. On the Rams’ next offensive set, Jacob Kemp of Town East intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for another touchdown to make it 14-0 after the point-after kick was blocked.
The Rams offense was able to drive down the field and find the end zone on a long passing play to make the score 14-6. With just a little over one minute left in the quarter, Town East had only run one offensive play, yet the Eagles were up. Town East was able to take the kickoff and methodically take it down the field and put it in the end zone with just a few seconds left in the quarter. The score came as Kemp took the handoff and went straight up the middle for a 10-yard touchdown jaunt.
It took CASA just one play to find the end zone again after that, however, as the Rams threw it deep once again. The quarter ended with Town East up, 20-12.
The second quarter saw Town East’s defense stiffen a bit and their offense run wild. The Eagles were able to outscore the Rams 38-6 in the quarter, with Johnson doing most of the damage on the ground. He was able to put it in the end zone three more times in the quarter with runs of 27 and 1 yard. He also had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Kemp found paydirt once again, as well, as he scored on a 16-yard run. Tim Muenzler got into the scoring column with a 5-yard touchdown reception from Smith, and the Eagles went into the half with a 58-18 advantage. Town East needed one more score to end it at the half, but the Eagles were unable to get it done.
The third quarter didn’t last long, as Johnson took the first handoff of the quarter 40 yards for a touchdown, his fifth of the game. The score made it a 64-18 game, and the game was called by virtue of the mercy rule. The mercy rule applies any time a team has a lead of 45 points or more at the half or anytime thereafter.
Johnson led the offensive effort with 113 yards and four touchdowns on 10 carries. Kemp ran three times for 41 yards and two touchdowns, and Muenzler pounded the rock twice for 15 more. Johnson completed two of three passing attempts for 15 yards, and Smith connected once for 5 yards. Muenzler had two grabs for 15 yards and a touchdown, while Matt Smith caught one pass for a yard.
Muenzler led the Town East defense with eight tackles, followed by Johnson with six, Kemp and Caleb Ceasor with four apiece, and Smith with two tackles.
Town East had to play the entire game with only six players due to an injury to the Eagles’ only other substitute player.
“I am very proud of my boys,” said Eagles Head Coach Robert Davis. “They had to play every snap of the game.
“They still need to get into better playing shape due to our lack of numbers, and also there was some confusion on some defensive assignments,” he said. “These are things that we can work on, though, and hopefully fix.”
The Eagles will now enjoy a bye week, but will return to action next week as Town East travels to Seguin to face Lifegate. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
