Three Rivers 43

THREE RIVERS -- It’s still early in the season, but after a second-straight disappointing loss, it is clear that the Nixon-Smiley Mustang football team needs to make some adjustments if they are going to have a good season and compete for a playoff spot out of District 15-2A DII. The Mustangs lost 43-14 last Friday in Three Rivers.

After falling to Flatonia to open the year, the Mustangs traveled to Three Rivers to take on the Bulldogs. Nixon-Smiley struggled from the opening kickoff, giving up three touchdowns in the first quarter, and a fourth less than a minute into the second.

The Bulldogs scored the first touchdown of the game at the 11:40 mark of the first quarter on a 50-yard run. Three minutes later, the Bulldogs scored again on an 18-yard jog into the end zone. With three minutes to play in the first, Jesse Perez sprinted 66 yards for the third Bulldog touchdown, and a 2-point conversion made the score 20-0.

Thirteen seconds into the second quarter, Three Rivers scored its fourth touchdown of the game on a 52-yard run. The 2-point conversion was good, and the score was now 28-0.

Midway through the second quarter, the Mustangs earned their first touchdown of the night as Tristan Newman capped off a Nixon-Smiley drive from 8 yards out. Oscar Torres booted the extra point, and the score was 28-7.

Three Rivers added a touchdown and 2-point conversion late in the half, and led by the score of 36-7 at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, Three Rivers tacked on to its lead with a 22-yard touchdown run and an extra point to make it a 43-7 contest. The Mustangs got a few points back on their next possession, as Newman raced 70 yards for a touchdown, and Torres added the extra point to make the final score 43-14.

Nixon-Smiley kept the ball on the ground, running 37 times for 202 yards. The Mustangs threw just twice, and only the grab by Garrett Earlywine yielded positive yardage for the team. Newman had the most yards with 93 on his three touches, Miguel Hernandez had 55 yards on 12 rushes, and Jared Van Auken ran 11 times for 20 yards.

With the loss, the Mustangs fall to 0-2 on the year. The team will play its first home game this Friday, Sept. 14, as the Yorktown Wildcats come to town. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Nixon.
