Stockdale 20
Jourdanton 6

JOURDANTON -- Stockdale opened its 2012 season with a convincing win over Cole, but was looking to back up that performance in Jourdanton last Friday night. The defense remained stingy with the Indians, as the Brahma offense found ways to move the ball, eventually giving Stockdale a 20-6 victory, and a 2-0 start to the year.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Brahma defense struck first in the game, earning Stockdale 2 points with a safety, catching Jourdanton’s Ian Chachere in the end zone. The Brahma offense then made the most of the short field opportunity that followed the kickoff, as senior running back Dusty Mosier capped off the drive with a 10-yard run across the goal line. The point-after attempt was no good, but the Brahmas led 8-0 with 6:45 to play in the half.

With time winding down in the second quarter, the Brahmas had another chance to score, and drove deep into Indian territory. The handoff then went to senior Darion McMahan, and he punched it in from 1 yard out. The Brahmas went for 2, but the passing attempt was no good, and the score stood at 14-0 in favor of Stockdale.

With less than two minutes to play in the half, the Brahma defense did its best to hold Jourdanton at bay, but the Indians managed to work the ball down the field, and eventually scored on a 5-yard passing play from Chase Harrison to Nathan Ramos. The point-after attempt was no good, and the score was 14-6 at the break.

The third quarter looked a lot like the first, as neither team was able to find the end zone. With just 12 minutes to play in the game, the score stood at 14-6, and it remained a one-possession game.

As the teams battled back and forth, and the clock descended toward zero, Stockdale got the play it needed, as junior running back Matt Valadez found a weakness in the Indian defense, and exploited it for 67 yards and the score. The point-after attempt was no good, but the Brahmas celebrated a 20-6 advantage with just 65 ticks remaining on the clock. Stockdale’s defense continued to do what it had done throughout the night, and Jourdanton was unable to cut its deficit, giving the Brahmas a 20-6 victory.

Valadez had another great night running the ball for Stockdale, as the Brahma back tallied a whopping 214 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Mosier had 31 yards on six carries, and quarterback Hunter Pierdolla added 31 of his own on 12 touches. Deryk Mayberry had one run for 8 yards, and McMahan had the touchdown run of 1 yard. Valadez caught both completions Pierdolla threw, and turned them into 18 yards for the Brahmas.

Stockdale’s defense played well, though the Indians still managed to tally 202 yards on 42 rushing attempts. Jourdanton also completed five of 18 passing attempts, though it netted the Indians just 18 yards.

With the win, the Brahmas improve to 2-0. Stockdale will face another big challenge this Friday, as the team travels to Falls City to face the Beavers, who are fresh off a loss in Poth. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and it’s sure to be a packed house in Beaver Stadium.
