Floresville Tigers drop home opener to Brackenridge
Floresville quarterback Colby Shodrock looks for a receiver downfield during the Tigers’ 41-14 loss to Brackenridge.
FLORESVILLE -- After winning their season opener under new Head Coach Jeff Luna, the Floresville Tigers were more excited than ever about the 2012 football season. Unfortunately, that excitement was taken down a notch last Friday evening, as the Tigers fell 41-14 to Brackenridge at Eschenburg Field.
After winning the coin toss and electing to defer to the second half, the Tigers kicked the ball away to the Eagles. Brackenridge started its opening drive at its own 37-yard line, and needed just two plays to score the first points of the game. After a short passing gain on first down, Eagle quarterback Ramon Richards sprinted 63 yards for 6 points. The point-after kick was good, and Floresville found itself down 7-0 with 10:58 still left to play in the first quarter.
The Tigers started their first drive of the game at their own 25-yard line, and picked up 5 more before disaster stuck. Floresville standout junior running back Hector Villegas went down with an injury, and medical staff took no chances, using a cart to carry him off the field before transporting him to the hospital for further examination. Fellow junior running back Ruben Benavides came into the game for Villegas. Benavides ran well on the night, but the Tigers were eventually forced to punt the ball away after their first drive stalled.
After taking over at their own 44, the Eagles immediately went to the air on first down for a big gain to the Tiger 20-yard line. However, a Brackenridge penalty brought it back, and backed the Eagles up another 15. It was of little consequence, however, as Brackenridge went to the air again, finding itself just outside the red zone at the Floresville 22. The Eagles eventually capped off the drive with an 11-yard toss from Richards to Kenneth May. The extra point was good, and the score was 14-0 with just over 5 minutes remaining in the first.
A short kick gave the Tigers great field position, as Floresville began its second possession from its own 44. The Tigers picked up a pair of key first downs, and then scored as senior quarterback Colby Shodrock rolled out of the pocket and hit fellow senior John Huber for a 35-yard touchdown. Esteban Mireles kicked the extra point, and the score stood at 14-7.
Tiger safety Dadrian Contreras gave the home crowd a bit more to cheer about on the Eagles’ next possession, as he picked off a Richards pass and gave the ball back to the Floresville offense on its own 27-yard line. Benavides and the offense went to work moving the ball out across midfield, and things looked to be turning around as the first quarter came to an end. A pair of false starts worked against the Tigers, and the momentum fell out as Floresville was forced to punt.
The punt put Brackenridge inside its own 20, and the Eagles once again went to the air. A Richards pass was tipped up, and the ball found its way into the waiting hands of senior linebacker John Handowski. The Tigers were unable to take advantage of the short field, however, eventually settling for a field-goal attempt, and then missing the kick wide to the left.
Brackenridge went on to score two additional touchdowns in the first half, and led the Tigers 28-7 at the break.
The Eagles continued to use a healthy balance of passing and running against Floresville, and tacked on two more touchdowns in the third quarter. As the teams moved into the final 12 minutes of the game, it was Brackenridge with a comfortable lead at 41-7.
The final touchdown of the game was set up with a big run from Benavides down to the Brackenridge 6-yard line. The ball came loose on first-and-goal, but Floresville recovered it on the 5-yard line. The ball went back over to Benavides, and he punched it in for the score. Mireles booted the extra point, and the board read 41-14, a score that would prove final.
Benavides picked up 101 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries for Floresville, while Cainan Payne added 56 yards on nine touches. Huber had one carry for 16 yards, and Handowski ran the ball twice in short-yardage situations for 3 yards. Villegas had 9 yards on two carries before the injury.
Shodrock completed three passes for 57 yards and a touchdown, hitting Troy Hughey twice for 22 yards and Huber once for 35 and the touchdown.
The 1-1 Tigers will now enjoy a week off before returning to action Friday, Sept. 21, against Lanier at the Springs Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
