Calhoun 56
La Vernia 40

LA VERNIA -- Few expected the La Vernia Bears to do much damage facing a state-ranked Class 4A team in the Port Lavaca Calhoun Sandcrabs. But the Bears kept the game close, falling to Calhoun 56-40.

Calhoun, fresh on the heels of a 41-9 thrashing of Class 5A Corpus Christi Carroll, took the field confident and, at first, appeared to move the ball at will. But, the determination and fighting spirit of La Vernia Bear football would not go down without a fight.

After taking an early 13-0 lead, the Sandcrabs appeared to be in firm control, until meeting the powerful rushing attack of the Bears -- led by Landon Richter and quarterback Vince Gill. The Bears scored quickly in the second quarter on an 8-yard run by Gill, though the point-after attempt failed, leaving the score 13-6.

Two minutes later, the Bears added to their score as Alec Dews recovered a Calhoun fumble and returned it 88 yards for a touchdown. Dews then kicked his own extra point, and the score was tied at 13-all.

Following a pair of Port Lavaca touchdown runs that put the Sandcrabs back on top 27-13, lightning struck a second time for Dews, as he returned another Port Lavaca fumble for 37 yards and a touchdown. The point after was no good, and the score was 27-19 in favor of the Sandcrabs. Port Lavaca added another touchdown before the half, and went into the break with a 34-19 advantage.

The Bears scored the first points of the second half when Gill connected with Levi Andrews for 48 yards and a touchdown. The 2-point attempt was no good, but the Bears were hanging in there at 34-25.

After two more Port Lavaca running touchdowns, the Bear offense got rolling again as Gill connected with Colby Sims for a 14-yard touchdown strike. Gill ran in for the 2-point conversion. The tandem reconnected in the fourth quarter, this time from 4 yards out, yielding the final touchdown of the game.

The Bear defense seemed at times overwhelmed by the rushing attack of the Sandcrabs, as running back Jakorious Williams led Port Lavaca to 642 yards on 53 carries.

In the end, it was the offense of La Vernia which kept the game close.

Gill completed four passes for 96 yards and three touchdowns during the game. Colby Sims pulled in two catches for 23 yards and two touchdowns, while Andrews had two receptions for 73 yards and a score.

On the ground, Richter led the Bear running game with 137 yards on 18 touches. Gill had 45 yards and a touchdown on 18 attempts, and Andrews had one rushing play good for 7 yards.

Coach Bo Robinson said his team showed improvement against Calhoun.

“I thought our kids improved somewhat,” Robinson said. “We didn’t tackle very good this week, especially our linebackers and secondary. This was a good team, but I know we did enough things right that in a few weeks, we’re going to be where we want to be.”

With the loss, the Bears fall to 0-2 early on the season. La Vernia will travel to Canyon Lake this Friday, Sept. 14, and will be back at home in two weeks against Wimberley. Kickoff for each game is set at 7:30 p.m.
