Floresville responds to readers’ concerns about skateboard park
(ABOVE) Peeling paint and graffiti on picnic tables were just some of the concerns residents raised about the Floresville Skateboard Park located at the corner of Sixth and A streets. This photo was taken Aug. 27. (BELOW) As evidenced by this photograph taken Sept. 12, several issues of concern in the Floresville Skateboard Park — including picnic tables marred by graffiti and peeling paint — have since been addressed by workers from the city’s parks department.

FLORESVILLE -- Workers from Floresville’s parks department have responded to some areas of concern with the city’s skateboard park, which were raised by some readers of the Wilson County News.

A visit to the park on Aug. 27 revealed graffiti, peeling paint, weeds and uncut grass, holes and ruts, boarded-up restroom facilities, an active beehive in an oak tree, and more. The newspaper took numerous photographs and contacted City Manager Andy Joslin, Mayor Daniel Tejada, and Floresville Economic Development Corp. (FEDC) Executive Director Jesse Perez via email.

Carolyn Leal-Palacios, who serves as the director of Floresville’s parks department, responded to the message. She said the park might have been between maintenance cycles when the photographs were taken, but that plans already were in the works to address the issues. Palacios also invited the Wilson County News to visit her at the park -- which is located at the corner of Sixth and A streets -- on Sept. 12.

Palacios indicated that most of the issues cited were resolved and that efforts were ongoing to address the rest of the concerns. The tables have been repainted and much of the graffiti is gone. In addition, grass has been cut and holes filled in.

Another issue the newspaper noted was a grind rail that was not properly secured, which could have posed a fall hazard. Palacios said the grind rail was not part of the actual park, and that she has had to dispose of several similar rails that were brought in from the outside. She discourages patrons from bringing their own rails or ramps to the park.

As for the beehive, Palacios said an exterminator sealed part of the tree, which will prevent the bees’ entry. The bees, however, will linger for a few more days.

“We’re genuinely concerned for the safety of everybody,” she said. “We want to make sure the parks are kept up and we welcome any ideas or help.”

The restrooms continue to be closed, because Palacios said vandals used rocks to smash the sinks and commodes in both the men’s and ladies’ rooms. Plans are under way for the FEDC to renovate and reopen the restrooms at a later date. Work also is under way to remove scores of large rocks from the park that have been a favorite tool of would-be vandals.

Despite the concerns relayed to the city by the Wilson County News, Palacios said no one has ever directly notified her of problems at the skateboard park. She welcomes anyone with concerns related to the skateboard park -- or any other city-maintained park or cemetery -- to call her at 830-391-1814.

In addition to the Floresville Skateboard Park, the crew of five permanent employees that comprise the Floresville Parks Department maintains the following:

•Floresville City Cemetery, U.S. 181 Business
•Floresville City Cemetery No. 2, Plum Street
•Floresville River Park, S.H. 97 West
•Masonic Park, S.H. 97 East
•Pecan Park and all four corners, U.S. 181 Business and S.H. 97
•Canta Rana Park, Goliad Road
•Veterans Memorial, City Hall, and City Hall Annex, D Street
•Old Town Lodi Hike and Bike Trail, between River Bend Golf Club and S.H. 97 West
•Lauro G. De Leon III Floresville Event Center, S.H. 97 West (with the help of an additional shared employee)
•All four corners at the intersection of Standish and 10th streets
•All bar ditches, street-corner signs, abandoned lots, and city utility easements.

Anyone with issues related to these areas is urged to call Parks Director Carolyn Leal-Palacios at 830-391-1814.

The only time downtown is really clean is after peanut festival. I agree this parks director needs to go. She is more worried about where she will eat lunch next than what her job is. Yeah her office is out at the event center ... More ›

The last time I was at River side park, it looked okay. Also the Pecan Park is in good shape. These guys have a lot to do for just 5 people. It is real easy see the negative. Why not give them credit for the good work they do.

My thoughts exactly, the response should be Proactive not reactive. These 5 workers should be the first to notice problems and inform their director if she's not checking herself. With 5 people working these sites they could ... More ›
