SAN ANTONIO -- Members of the La Vernia cross-country teams recently traveled to San Antonio to participate in the annual UTSA Ricardo Romo Classic Sept. 15.

In girls competition, the No. 1 state-ranked La Vernia Lady Bear team remained undefeated by clenching yet another meet title. The team raced with 201 Class 3A girls on a 2-mile course through lots of mud following the recent rains.

Out of the field of 200, sophomore Olivia Hinojosa finished in first place for La Vernia, followed closely by junior Bailee Vrana in second place. Jessica Perry finished ninth for the Lady Bears, Shaley Trammell was 15th, and Dakota Guerrero helped round out the top 20. The team finished with 47 points, beating their competitors by a wide margin, as the second-place team from Zapata finished with 111 points. The other Lady Bear runners in action, and who contributed to the La Vernia win, were Brianna Kruciak (49), Elizabeth Moczygemba (67), Sabrina Wolf (70), Shayler Ring (91), Sierra Fuller (99), Brittany Thompson (104), Kasandra Arteaga (124), Erin Tuttle (133), Annie Lowak (139), Katie Cribb (157), Ashland Newburg (158), and Taylor Katzenstein (181).

In varsity boys competition, the La Vernia Bears raced against 210 fellow 3A runners in a 5K to finish fifth in the team standings. Junior Dillon Goan led La Vernia with a fourth-place finish, followed by senior Robert Guzman in sixth. Other runners participating were Andrew Cribb (13th), Gage Brandt (66), Isaac Combs (83), Colton Ploch (103), Zachary Lansford (116), Braden Mangum (131), Cody Hertz (147), Michael Leija (148), Drake Bruner (154), and Simon Kerstein (203).
