FLORESVILLE -- For the Floresville High School tennis team, the fall team tennis season has gotten off to a great start. Out of 15 matches played, they have won 14.

To begin its season, the Floresville tennis team played Southwest, Stevens, and Judson high schools in a tri-match. Floresville came out on top in the tri-match, beating Southwest 10-1, Stevens 16-3, and Judson 10-9. Coach Mario Martinez was very impressed with the outcome, since the team lost to Judson the year before. The win gave the team confidence and set the tone for the upcoming season.

For the first time, the tennis team participated in a non-district team tournament, the NISD Silver Team Tournament in San Antonio. Out of the 16 teams in the tournament, Floresville came in second. It began the tournament by playing against Taft, and won 10-1. In the quarters, Floresville beat charter schools Incarnate Word and Central Catholic 11-1. Then, in the semi-finals, Floresville beat Del Rio 10-5. In the finals, the team went up against Eagle Pass, and after a long two days of playing out in the Texas heat, the team lost 10-4. Although the ending was disappointing, the tournament overall was a very exciting accomplishment for the tennis team.

Senior boy captain Sheldon Snyder said, “The NISD Silver Team Tournament was definitely the most rewarding. I feel that winning against 5A schools was a statement that we, as a team, should not be underestimated.”

District matches for the tennis team also started very early. Being part of District 29-4A for the 2012-14 seasons, the tennis team played San Antonio Kennedy and McCollum already. Floresville beat both Kennedy and McCollum 19-0. The team still has Uvalde and Medina Valley to face before the actual district tournament in October; however, with the current record, Floresville hopes to keep up the wins, and get the No. 1 spot for the district tournament.

“I feel that the team has come out strong this year,” said senior girl captain Madison Pollok. “Every one of us is determined to make this year count in the district standings.”

Players on the team refer to this year’s team as the “Dream Team.” With five senior boys and five senior girls on the varsity team, which has 10 boys and nine girls altogether, they feel that this is their year to show off how hard they have worked to get to the place they are now. Both captains hope for the team to be district champions this year and advance to regionals for a ninth consecutive year.

Other teams Floresville has beaten are New Braunfels Canyon (12-3), San Antonio Lee (10-4), Madison (13-6), and Boerne High School (14-5). Parents and students have been a big support this year by coming and watching the team. With many more matches to come, the team hopes to keep up its impressive record. The tennis team will compete in another tri-match in Fredericksburg this weekend.
