EAST CENTRAL -- After a pair of victories to open their 2012 season, the Hornets suffered a setback last Friday night as East Central fell 24-0 to Brennan, the area’s No. 1-ranked 4A football team.

A number of offensive miscues, along with the inability to get their ground game rolling, hampered the Black and Gold throughout the evening. East Central totaled just 163 yards on the night that included a fumble, four interceptions, and a rushing average of just 2.71 yards. Throw in seven penalties for 65 yards, and the end result appears quite obvious.

The first points of the game came six seconds into the second quarter as Brennan’s David Gonzales booted a 33-yard field goal. The Bears went on to score twice more in the second quarter, as quarterback DeShawn Key ran in a pair of 1-yard touchdowns. Both point-after kicks were good, and Brennan led 17-0 at the break. Midway through the third quarter, Makai Green sprinted for 68 of his 95 yards on the night, scoring again for the Bears. Gonzales added the extra point, and it was 24-0, a score that would prove final.

In addition to being kept off the scoreboard, the Hornets’ offensive numbers were atypical, to say the least. Senior running back Chris Armstrong was held to just 7 yards on nine rushing attempts. Quarterback Jeremy Jones was the team’s leading rusher with 38 yards on five carries, and Wanya Ward ran the ball once for 20. Jonathan Jackson had three carries for 3 yards and Javion Polk ran twice for 1 yard.

The Hornets have shown they can throw the ball this year, and while their passing numbers were better than those on the ground, it still wasn’t enough for East Central to score. Jeremy Jones completed five of 13 passing attempts for 58 yards, but was picked off three times. His brother, Christian, completed four of nine passing attempts for 40 yards and also threw an interception. Ward was the Hornets’ leading receiver with 46 yards on four grabs, and Dustin Toscano reeled in two passes for 36 yards. Jackson caught a pass for 12 yards, and Brett Casey caught one pass for 4 yards.

Defensively, the Hornets played well, though they still allowed 24 points. East Central’s defense held the potent Brennan offense to 218 total yards, including 158 on the ground and 60 through the air. The Hornets allowed just seven first downs, while forcing seven Bear punts.

The loss drops the Hornets to 2-1 on the year, and things won’t be getting any easier from here. East Central will travel to Converse this Friday, Sept. 21, to face the Judson Rockets at Rutledge Stadium. From there, the team will wrap up its non-district schedule at home against New Braunfels. Kickoff between the Hornets and Rockets will be at 7:30 p.m.
