POTH -- Poth Independent School District Superinten-dent Scott Caloss suggested -- and the Poth City Council has approved -- the installation of a new stop sign at the intersection of Schneider and Dickson streets and several new crosswalks. The action was taken during the Sept. 17 Poth City Council meeting.

The stop sign will apply to traffic bound for U.S. 181 at the intersection of Schneider and Dickson streets.

The city will paint three crosswalks at the intersection, as well. These additions will be mutually beneficial to the school district and the city, enhancing student and pedestrian safety and providing for a more consistent, safe flow of vehicles. The project is expected to be complete within two weeks.

Due to an overall increase in property values in the area, thanks to the oil and gas boom in the Eagle Ford shale, the city of Poth will collect approximately $201,000 in property taxes in the 2012-13 fiscal year. This will be up $5,000, or 2.55 percent, from the current fiscal year. New properties will account for $1,489 of this difference.

The council approved the tax rate for the coming fiscal year of 26.30 cents per $100 of appraised value. Maintenance and operations will account for 22.82 cents, while 3.48 cents will go toward debt service.

According to the Wilson County Appraisal District, the average home in Poth is appraised at $103,749, which will mean a tax bill of $272.86 for such a home. Last year, the average value was $100,845. With the previous tax rate of 27.28 cents per $100 of appraised value, a tax bill on such a home was $275.11. At the new rate, the average tax bill will decrease by $2.25.

According to the approved budget, the city’s general fund will receive $601,110 in revenue, but will operate within a budget of $165,985. The water department is expected to take in $775,860 in revenue.

In a separate agenda item, the council approved a balanced budget for the Poth Economic Development Corp. of $42,500. The budget year will begin Oct. 1.

Also during the meeting, police Chief Lambert Jendrzey presented his final report to the council. Jendrzey will retire from the Poth Police Department after seven years of service. A former Texas Department of Public Safety officer, Jendrzey joined the Poth Police Department in September 2005. He leaves his post Sept. 30.

***In attendance: Councilmen Linda Criado, Steve Martinez, and Darren Dylla; Mayor Travis Pruski, City Secretary Rose Huizar, Police Chief Lambert Jendzrey.

How about making the traffic one way on each side of the drive in window in front of Wells Fargo Bank on the plaza. Those backing out of parking places at the bank seldom look to their left for traffic, assuming it is one way. ... More ›
