LA VERNIA -- La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) trustees have approved a $700,000 multi-year technology proposal, which includes the purchase of iPads for each district employee, along with technology upgrades. This was among the short list of items dealt with by the trustees during their Sept. 17 regular meeting, according to Superintendent Tom Harvey after the meeting.

Based upon input from campus-based technology standards identified by several committees, individual teacher assessments, and consultation with the school board, the plan includes adding a technology specialist with skills and experience as an educator. This person will assist teachers as they implement new strategies in the classroom. The plan also includes more computers and printers district-wide and infrastructure improvements, such as improved switches, storage circuits, and other equipment to handle increased capacity at a faster rate.

Harvey said the iPads for district employees will enable teachers and staff to communicate more effectively, as well as make better use of technology in the classrooms.

The approximately $700,000 makeover plan received applause from those attending the meeting.

In other business, high school Counselor Dede Braun and Principal Cheryl Barron presented a report regarding dual-credit courses, in which students receive high school and college credit. A total of 122 students are taking 176 dual-credit courses. According to the report, the district has an expense of approximately $9,900 for fees associated with these courses. La Vernia ISD has a shared-service arrangement with East Central ISD, Navarro ISD, and Southwest Prep; each pays a proportionate cost for providing the dual-credit courses.

Harvey said that the use of distance learning is a great cost-savings measure for La Vernia.

Trustees also approved hiring an additional kindergarten teacher, due to continued growth in the district, bringing the number of kindergarten classes to 11. This is up from nine last year, Harvey said.

Why don't we pay their water and electric bills too. We spent 800K+ for a one time pay increase and now we are buying them iPads. Was this purchase in the 5 year plan? This is why we need a new school board who will take ... More ›

Here we go again. I thought that when LVISD received $1.5 million in 2010 from the Federal Stimulus that the system was updated. Guess that did not happen huh? I love it that someone has squashed all the issues that haunted ... More ›
