Floresville P&Z nixes mobile-home park
FLORESVILLE -- Citizens living near the 600 block of Fourth Street here are breathing a sigh of relief after the Floresville Planning and Zoning Commission denied a special use permit for a mobile-home park at 624 Fourth St.
Several neighboring residents were in attendance to voice their opposition to the proposed mobile-home park.
“I work in the oil fields,” said neighbor David Flores. “I know what goes on at places like that. These ‘man camps’ are full of oil-field workers, primarily men, and are usually filled with alcohol and recklessness.”
Paul Sisley, the landowner requesting the permit, said his facility would have strived to find decent tenants.
“I wouldn’t want people that would tear up my mobile homes,” Sisley said. “If it would have gotten approved, I would have made sure to lease the homes out to tenants who would be able to pay rent and would have made an effort to ensure that families rented the homes. It was not my desire to have mobile homes full of workers or a ‘man camp.’”
Commission member Philip Vipond made a motion to deny the application, based on the citizens’ input.
“One of the main duties we are charged with is ensuring that it would be harmonious with the surrounding area,” Vipond said. “Based on what the public has advised us, and their sentiment, I believe the mobile-home park is not harmonious.”
The commission voted 3-2 to deny Sisley’s application permit.
“It’s upsetting,” Sisley said. “But I will see what I can do to fulfill the harmonious requirement and hopefully this is not the end.”
