Earl Edwin “Eddy” Bailey passed away peacefully during the early hours of Monday, Sept. 3, 2012. He transitioned following an extended yet graceful battle with COPD.

Eddy was born Aug. 8, 1954, in Oklahoma but proudly called himself an “Austinite” and embraced all that is Austin, Texas: huge music fan, artist gamer, and lover of the outdoors. He did his part to “Keep Austin Weird.” Eddy was raised in the Oklahoma City area. In 1972, he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Sicily until his discharge in 1976. During the leaves, he traveled extensively across Europe and the British Isles and had many fond memories of this time despite being during the Vietnam War.

Upon his return, Eddy worked at various construction jobs, roofing, and apartment management in the Oklahoma City area. In the early 80s, he discovered Austin. He also met Suzanne and they were married in 1989. Eddy worked in roofing initially. Fowler Custom Gutters and the Upstairs Maid became his second families for a number of years. His health prevented him from working for the past several years. He spent his time enjoying music, painting, reading sci-fi, and gaming. His days were full and happy and he was deeply loved by many.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Bone; his stepmother, Carolyn Caldwell; his brother, Gary Caldwell; his mother-in-law, Dottie Ashley; and his brother-in-law, Bill Ashley.

Eddy is survived by his wife, Suzanne; his stepfather, George “Bud” Caldwell of Guthrie, Okla.; his brothers, Dean Bailey of Guthrie and Tracy Caldwell of Granbury, Texas; his sisters, Nancy Snodgrass and husband Ron of San Antonio and Sammie Johnson of Florida; his father-in-law, Carl Ashley of Sequin; his nieces, Ashley Carlson, Maya Snodgrass, and Deva Snodgrass; and his nephew, Josh Snodgrass.

Eddy’s wish was to be cremated.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Stockdale, Texas. Those attending were asked to dress casually, perhaps wearing their favorite T-shirt for Eddy.

Memorial contributions may be made to a local Humane Society.

A special thanks is extended to Tommy and Dr. Beach for their loving care and support and to all the extended family and friends who loved Eddy. Peace.
