FLORESVILLE -- After a rough start to the season that left the Jaguars at 10-16, the Floresville varsity volleyball program is back on track, and has put together a perfect 5-0 district season thus far.
Back on Aug. 14, the Jags began their 2012 season with a dual at home. Floresville lost its first two games of the season that day, falling to La Vernia and Navarro. The team came back strong later in the week with a 3-1 win over Class 5A East Central, but then suffered a series of losses in the Northside Tournament, plummeting the team’s record to 1-7.
From there, Floresville tasted victory once again with a win over Somerset. That led to a win over Providence, and then again over Pearsall. The Jags had their share of wins and losses while competing in the Floresville and Seguin tournaments. The Jaguars wrapped up their non-district schedule with a loss in Alamo Heights, and knew they still had to do some work to find success and reach their goals in district.
Floresville began its District 29-4A season on Sept. 7 with a match against Medina Valley. While the Lady Panthers were able to steal one set, the Jags took the other three en route to their 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21 victory.
Things got a little tighter for Floresville during the team’s second district match of the year, as the Jags traveled to San Antonio to square off with Harlandale. Floresville took the first set by the score of 25-23, but then fell in the second and third sets, 27-25 and 25-19. The Jaguars came back in the fourth to win 25-13, thereby forcing a fifth and final set in a race to 15. Floresville came out strong in the race, and took the match victory with a 15-8 win in the fifth.
With a pair of wins under their belts, the Jags continued the road trip with matches against Kennedy and Memorial. Floresville won both in straight sets, and improved their district mark to 4-0 before returning home to face old rival Southside last Friday night in Floresville.
As was the case with their two prior opponents, the Jags made quick work of the Lady Cardinals, winning the match 25-14, 25-18, 25-20. Seniors Jamie Crowder and Melanie Reed led the attack, combining for 29 kills, while sophomore setter Michaela Sifuentes kept her players in the right positions. Vanessa Rodriguez and Sifuentes led the defensive effort with 12 digs apiece, followed by senior Sonja Tweeten with 6 digs and junior Jade Jimenez with another 5. Crowder and Reed also combined for 3 blocks.
As of press time, the Jags were sitting on a 5-0 district record with their last two matches of the first round pending. Floresville was scheduled to host Uvalde at home Sept. 25, and will be at McCollum this Friday, Sept. 28, to close things out. The Jags will then begin round two next Tuesday, Oct. 2, and Floresville will be focused on continuing its winning ways as it fights for a district title and spot in postseason play.
