Town East finishes game with only five
Town East 22
Seguin Lifegate 70
SEGUIN -- Last Friday night, the Town East Eagles made the 30-minute trip out to Seguin to take on their heated rivals from Seguin. The No. 5-ranked Lifegate Falcons came out on top 70-22, but the Eagles made quite an impression on the opposing team, their fans, and the Town East fans, as well.
Early in the first quarter, with Seguin on top 14-0, Eagle linebacker and running back Jacob Kemp went down with a season-ending injury. Town East only had six players to start the game in Seguin, so Town East suddenly found itself short one player. It would have been easy for the Eagles to just give up and go home, but that’s not what the Eagles had in mind. Instead, the team played with just five men on the field, and fought back to a 28-14 score late in the second quarter, thanks in part to a 45-yard kickoff return and a 42-yard touchdown reception by Dante Johnson.
Town East was unable to stop the Lifegate offense due to the Eagles’ lack of personnel, but Town East was able to move the ball on offense against the Falcons, something nobody had been able to do all year. Lifegate came into the contest having given up an average of just 2 points per game. Town East, while short a man, was able to put 22 points on the board.
The first quarter ended with Town East down 36-14. In the second quarter, Town East was outscored 14-8, thanks in part to some ball-control offense and some inspired defensive efforts by the Eagles. On offense, Town East was able to punch it in from 3 yards out thanks to some great blocking and hard running by Johnson. The halftime score was Lifegate 50, Town East 22, but you wouldn’t have known that by all the yelling that was coming from the Lifegate coaches. It could be heard all the way from the other side of the field.
All the yelling seemed to work though, as Lifegate outscored Town East 20-0 in the third quarter to end the game by virtue of the 45-point mercy rule. The game was called with 39 seconds left in the third.
Town East was led in rushing by Johnson with 76 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. He also had 94 yards receiving with one touchdown on three receptions. Tim Muenzler brought in five receptions for 36 yards. Tyler Smith was 7 of 21 for 130 yards with one touchdown throwing the ball.
On defense, Muenzler and Johnson each had 10 tackles. Smith had many hard hits while collecting three tackles. Caleb Ceasor contributed two tackles and Matt Smith had one.
“In my 23 years of coaching, I have never been more proud of a group of young men,” said Town East Head Coach Robert Davis. “Years from now, nobody will remember the score of this game, but we will all remember the heart and desire that was displayed on the field that night.
“We, as adults, could learn a lot from these young men and what they showed on the field,” Davis added. “They fought through cramps all night since they had to play offense, defense, and special teams. All the while, Lifegate was substituting freely.”
The loss drops Town East to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in district play. Lifegate improves to 4-0 for the year and 1-0 in district. Town East will play Castle Hills Christian this Friday at 7 p.m. at Wiseman Field in La Vernia.
