Wimberley 24
La Vernia 10

LA VERNIA -- A difficult non-district schedule continues to challenge the La Vernia Bear football team. The Bears played host to the Wimberley Texans, the defending state champs, and came up on the short end of a 24-10 decision.

Wimberley put the game’s first points on the board midway through the first quarter with a 22-yard touchdown run and extra point. The 7-point lead then doubled less than 90 seconds later, as Wimberley’s Bryce Rainwater picked off a Vince Gill passing attempt and returned it 33 yards for a score.

With the score at 14-0 and six minutes remaining on the first-quarter clock, a defensive struggle erupted. The score remained the same throughout the remainder of the first quarter, as well as most of the second.

With 3:16 to play in the first half, senior placekicker Alec Dews showed his range, booting a 45-yard field goal to put the Bears on the board. Then, after a great defensive stand, the Bear offense returned to the field and made a push for the end zone. The quick scoring drive was capped off as Gill connected with Jose Sahagun for a 6-yard touchdown strike with just 23 seconds remaining on the clock. As the teams headed for the locker room, the Texans held a slight lead at 14-10.

The defensive units continued to show their strength throughout the second half, and the scores were minimal. While the Bears were shut out altogether in the second half, Wimberley managed to add a field goal midway through the third quarter, and a touchdown midway through the fourth. When the clock finally expired, it was Wimberley with the 24-10 win.

La Vernia’s offense struggled throughout the night, managing just 108 total yards of offense. Gill had pressure on him throughout the night, and ended the game with 36 yards on the ground and 47 yards and a touchdown through the air. Landon Richter was held to just 16 yards on 8 carries, Jake Wiatrek ran twice for 6 yards, and Javante Anderson had one carry for 3 yards. Sahagun led the Bear receiving corps with 34 yards and the touchdown on four grabs. Dews had a catch for 12 yards, and Adam Alcorta caught three passes for 6 yards.

The loss drops the Bears to 1-3 on the year, with two more non-district games remaining before the start of district play. La Vernia will travel to Bandera this Friday, where the Bears will take on the 1-3 Bulldogs, who are coming off their first win of the year. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
