D’Hanis 32
Falls City 27

FALLS CITY -- It was a close back-and-forth battle throughout the night, but in the end, the visiting D’Hanis Cowboys managed one touchdown more than the Falls City Beavers, and skipped town with a 32-27 victory.

Falls City used its potent offensive attack that methodically blends the running and passing games into a scoring machine. The Beavers struck first in the contest last Friday, needing less than two minutes to score on a 20-yard touchdown run from senior Phillip Lyssy. Yoseph Cruz booted the extra point, and the score was 7-0 to start Homecoming night.

D’Hanis responded on its first possession, and reached the end zone on a 13-yard passing play. The point-after attempt was no good, and Falls City clung to the lead, 7-6.

The defensive units from each team stepped up play following the opening drives, and the first quarter ended with no additional scores. In the second quarter, though, Falls City added 6 to the board as senior quarterback Cameron Soto ran in from 2 yards out. The Beavers failed to convert on the point-after attempt, and the score stood at 13-6 in favor of Falls City. The celebration was short-lived, however, as the Cowboys came right back down the field, using less than two minutes to score their second touchdown of the night on another passing play. The point-after kick was good this time, and the teams were locked at 13-all as they headed into halftime.

A few minutes into the third quarter, Lyssy broke the tie when he broke through the Cowboy defense for a 25-yard touchdown run. The Beavers went for 2 points on the conversion, but came up short, making the score 19-13 in favor of Falls City.

While the Beavers showed the power of their running game, the Cowboys continued to impress through the air, and scored their third touchdown of the game on another passing play, this time for 29 yards and the touchdown. The point-after kick was no good, and the score was once again tied, now 19-19.

After holding the Falls City offense at bay, the Cowboys went back to work and took their first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Chance Barlow. The extra point tacked on another, and D’Hanis led 26-19. The lead was not to last for long, though, as Falls City thundered right back down the field, and scored its fourth touchdown of the game on a 16-yard scramble to the end zone by Soto. Soto then connected with junior Tyler Moore for the 2-point play, and the Beavers celebrated a 27-26 advantage.

Falls City gave the ball back to D’Hanis with nearly seven minutes still remaining in the game. It appeared that the game could come down to who had the final possession, as each team showed its ability to move the ball and score.

With just over two minutes to play in the game, the Cowboys scored on another Barlow 1-yard rushing touchdown. The 2-point attempt was no good, but D’Hanis regained the lead at 32-27. The Beavers had a little time left, but had to have a score.

Despite their best efforts, the Beavers came up a little short, and the Cowboys crashed the Homecoming party by defeating Falls City 32-27.

Soto guided the Beaver offense on the night by completing 12 of 24 passing attempts for 165 yards, while also running the ball nine times for another 46 yards. Lyssy led the Beaver running game with 95 yards on 11 carries, and also caught two passes for 29 yards. David Brodsky ran three times for 38 yards, Cody Jendrusch had a pair of rushing attempts for 16 yards, Dean Gaskamp had one touch for 10 yards, and Jon Swierc carried one time for 1 yard.

Stephen Harlos was Soto’s favorite target of the night, as he reeled in five catches for 65 yards. Dylan Urbanczyk caught a pass for 28 yards, Royce Leonhardt caught two passes for 25 yards, Gaskamp caught a pass for 11 yards, and Cody Houdmann caught another for 7.

The Beaver defense played well, but had trouble containing a Cowboy offense that threw for more than 300 yards and ran for another 100.

As the Cowboys improve to 4-0 on the year, the Beavers fall to an even mark of 2-2. Falls City will be at home again this week as the Three Rivers Bulldogs come to town. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Beaver Stadium.
