Floresville Rotary Club installs new officers
New Floresville Rotary Club President Jose Martinez (third from left) is joined by officials of Rotary District 5840 (from left) Yvonne Soliz-Valdez, Monica Gutierrez, Jocelyn Martinez, District Governor Lisa Herring, and Assistant Governor Eugene Simor.
The Floresville Rotary Club installed Jose Martinez as its president for 2012-13. Martinez has an Allstate Insurance agency in San Antonio, but resides in the Floresville area. He has a lengthy Rotary resume, as he has served as club president in Laredo and San Antonio. Other officers installed include Gary Carman, president-elect; Diane Walcutt, vice president; Yvonne Moseley, secretary; and Jessie Davis, treasurer.
In May the club sponsored its fifth annual Shrimp Boil in The Beer Warehouse near downtown Floresville where “Uncle Willy” provided entertainment. The sell-out crowd enjoyed Cajun shrimp, potatoes, sausage, corn, and beverages. Profits support local charities.
This year, $1,000 college scholarships were awarded to Serena Holder and Elizabeth Garza of Floresville High School. Other local charities supported include soccer teams and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). Awards were given to Lindsey Wilson and Katie Smith at Floresville High School. RYLA provides effective training experiences for selected youth, encourages leadership by youth, and recognizes publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities. In Rotary District 5840 RYLA events are held at Newk’s Ranch in New Braunfels.
Rotary International consists of more than 38,000 Rotary Clubs, which are scattered over the 50 states and in virtually every country in the world. Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” The organization is active in eradicating polio worldwide, is involved in water-drilling efforts in Africa, and plays a role in every manner of local charity, where people are in need. In 2012 Rotary International holds its international conference in Lisbon, Portugal.
Currently, the Floresville Rotary Club meets two nights each month in Jack’s Café at 507 10th St. (U.S. 181) in Floresville.
