Floresville hires new comptroller

FLORESVILLE -- After an almost two-month search, the city of Floresville has hired a new comptroller, Lara Feagins.
Feagins, who comes to Floresville from the city of Elgin, said she has been working in accounting since the age of 17.
“I’ve done accounting all of my life,” Feagins said. “I’m definitely a numbers person; it’s what I love. “
The mother of a 24-year-old Texas A&M graduate, Feagins said she loves South Central Texas.
Feagins has an associate degree in business accounting from Dallas County Community College and more than 12 years in governmental experience.
“In addition to my experience in government, I have also audited in between,” Feagins said. “I worked for an auditing firm that audited counties, school districts, and cities.”
Feagins worked in Cibolo for three years before becoming the finance and human resources director for the city of Elgin, where she also worked for three years.
“I left Cibolo after three years and then went to Elgin, but I knew I wasn’t going to stay there,” she said. “Staying in Elgin was never my plan. I am happy to be where I am now.”
Feagins applauded the work done by Floresville city officials to comply with the findings of the recent audit.
“There has been a lot of work done to make sure all of the accounts are as they need to be,” Feagins said. “I have reviewed the audit and it seems what needed to be fixed has been.”
Tom Smith, a temporary CPA hired from Accountemps, had originally filled the position, which was created when the city of Floresville reorganized in the midst of an audit controversy earlier this year.
Smith was a contract employee; although the city considered making his employment permanent, he eventually took another position in Bulverde.
Feagins said she has ideas for helping to ensure the finances run smoothly for the city of Floresville.
“One thing is to ensure the monthly reports go out to department heads,” Feagins said. “That is the main thing that needs to happen. Reports to the citizens, as well, need to be a priority. I think I can make a difference here and I look forward to going out for grants for the city.”
An avid outdoorsman, Feagins said she is definitely an on-the-go person. She rides with two rodeo drill teams, the U.S. Marshals Posse Drill Team from Stockdale and the Bexar County Palomino Patrol and Drill Team out of San Antonio.
