Opry donates to library
The Wilson County Historical Society donated $4,000 to the Wilson County Public Library. Presenting a replica of the check are (from left) Roy Munro, Viola Henke, LaJuana Newnam-Leus, Librarian Nicki Stohr, Gene Maeckel, and Maurine Liles. (WCN Photo by Elaine Kolodziej)
Proceeds from the Floresville Opry have made it possible for the Sam Fore Jr. Wilson County Public Library to hire high school intern Caitlin Taylor.
The Wilson County Historical Society, through its sponsorship of the Floresville Opry, was able to provide a $4,000 grant to the library, enabling them to employ a co-op student for 10 hours per week.
It will be her job to assist library staff and cemetery project volunteers in updating the book Cemeteries of Wilson County, Texas. The self-published book by Irma M. Meyr lists more than 130 cemeteries and burial plots.
This will be a massive project that will include photographing as many of the remaining headstones as possible, watermarking the photos with a copyright statement in order for the photos to be posted on the library’s website, scrapbooking the digital images so that individuals without a computer can view the photos, researching death notices, and cataloging the photos for viewing.
Caitlin will be working closely with the library staff and volunteers, who will be adding global positioning system (GPS) coordinates to the scrapbook pages and the library’s cemetery website.
They hope to have the newly updated book ready for printing by December 2013.
