Poth church to celebrate 90 years
On Sunday, Oct. 14, St. John Lutheran Church of Poth will be commemorating its 90th anniversary with a special worship hour at 10 a.m. The church was founded in November of 1922 on land that was reserved by Poth’s founding fathers for the first Protestant church. Lutherans, who had been meeting at homes in the area, were the first to claim the land, and a permanent home was found. The church stands humbly in the center of town, the steeple topped with a cross. The first baby baptized at St. John was Walter Ulbricht, and Lillie (nee Schneider) Warnken was among the first class of Confirmands in 1923.
St. John Lutheran Church of Poth is part of the larger community, participating in helping through the food pantry, disaster relief, and community projects. Regular worship services are held each Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m., followed by Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. There is also a Saturday evening service on the fourth Saturday of each month beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a soup and sandwich social hour. A “Games Night” has recently been added on the first Wednesday of the month. Church and community friends and family are invited to come together at 6 p.m. for a light meal and a variety of games to please those from the youngest to the oldest.
Christ gave us a mission in Matthew 20:19-20 when He said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” It is with this mission in mind that St. John moves forward into the future, even as we come together to celebrate the past 90 years.
