SARA creates internship opportunity
SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio River Authority (SARA) has created the Michael Gonzales Memorial Internship program to honor Michael “Mike” Gonzales, deputy director of technical services at SARA, who passed away suddenly in June. This internship opportunity will be awarded to a highly motivated, outstanding undergraduate student of a Texas institute of higher education in 2013. It is designed to provide a student interested in aquatic science the opportunity to intern with SARA’s Environmental Sciences Department in San Antonio.
The selected intern will mainly work outdoors. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, collection of water quality samples, fish collection by electroshocker and seine, and habitat evaluations. However, interns will also be instructed in sample and laboratory quality assurance and quality control procedures as well as data management practices.
Throughout his 30-year career at the River Authority, Gonzales was actively involved with the education and development of students and young science professionals. He loved teaching individuals and groups about a wide variety of environmental and conservation issues ranging from environmental flow and surface water quality issues to catch-and-release fishing.
