FALLS CITY -- Just one week removed from their disappointing loss to D’Hanis, the Falls City Beavers got back on track, beating the Three Rivers Bulldogs in every aspect of the game to secure a 32-14 win as they head into District 14-1A DII play.
The Beavers led from the onset, taking a 13-0 lead after the first quarter, and holding a 25-6 advantage at the break. Falls City tacked on another 7 points in the third quarter, and led 32-6 before allowing Three Rivers one final score in the fourth quarter.
On offense, the Beavers got it done with both the run and the pass. Falls City used a balanced attack while working from the spread, racking up 178 yards on the ground, and 157 yards through the air. Senior quarterback Cameron Soto led the way with 12 rushing carries for 67 yards, while also completing 11 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Phillip Lyssy ran the ball three times for 44 yards and a touchdown, junior David Brodsky picked up 28 yards on four carries, and fellow junior Kendall Kanak added 22 yards on two carries. Jon Swierc and Cody Jendrusch combined for another 17 yards.
Lyssy was Soto’s favorite target to throw to on the night, as the senior reeled in five catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Dean Gaskamp caught two passes for 52 yards, Cody Houdmann caught two for 13 yards, and Stephen Harlos had one catch for 9 yards. Royce Leonhardt caught one pass on the night, but the senior made it count, turning it into a 33-yard touchdown reception.
The Beavers were also getting things done on defense throughout the night. Eric Wiatrek recovered a fumble for the Beavers, and Gaskamp came up with an interception. Soto also made some big plays on defense, covering up a fumble, and picking off a Three Rivers pass before returning it 35 yards for a Falls City touchdown.
In addition to the fumble recovery, Wiatrek also led the Beaver defense in tackles by a wide margin, racking up 10 solo tackles and 14 assists. Austen Camber tallied six solo tackles and three assists, and Dylan Cheatham and Phillip Lyssy each earned three solos and six assists. Colton Beam had four solos and five tackle assists. Devon Lyssy had one solo tackle to go along with three quarterback sacks.
It’s always nice to have some help on special teams, and Camber gave the home crowd some excitement against Three Rivers as the junior speedster took a kickoff 79 yards to the house.
In the end, the only number and statistic that matters is the win, which gives the Beavers a 3-2 overall record heading into the district play.
Falls City will have a bye this week, but will return to action next Friday, Oct. 12, as the Beavers and their new Head Coach Steve Marbach travel to Pettus to face his old team, the Eagles. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
