La Vernia 14
Bandera 34

BANDERA -- A tough season of football continues for the La Vernia Bears, as the team suffers its fourth loss of the season in Bandera, a 34-14 decision.

The Bulldogs got things going midway through the first quarter of play with the team’s first touchdown on a 1-yard run by Kavan Conner. Conner then scored again in the opening minute of the second quarter, this time on a 2-yard run. At the 7:06 mark of the second quarter, Bandera scored its third touchdown of the evening on a 20-yard passing play from Michael Miller to Noah Nelson. Two out of three kicks were good, and the Bulldogs led 20-0.

The Bears got rolling on their next possession of the game, and scored with just under five minutes to play in the half as senior Jake Wiatrek scored on a 13-yard run. Alec Dews booted the extra point, and it was 20-7 in favor of Bandera.

After a good defensive stand, the La Vernia offense went back to work with little time remaining in the half. The Bears went to the air, and scored on a 45-yard passing play from junior Colby Sims to junior Rudy Mendoza. Dews was two for two kicking the ball, and the score stood at 20-14 at the break.

Unfortunately for La Vernia, the Bears couldn’t get much going in the second half, and were held scoreless throughout. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, managed to score twice in the closing minutes of the third quarter with touchdown runs from Conner and Nelson. The score was 34-14 at the end of the third, and remained the same throughout the entire fourth quarter of play.

While Bandera managed to total 508 yards of offense, La Vernia was held to 264 total yards, including 219 on the ground and 45 through the air.

Sims completed just one of his five passing attempts, though it went for 45 yards and a touchdown to Mendoza. Vince Gill ran the ball eight times for 101 yards for La Vernia, while Sims ran seven times for 45 yards, and Wiatrek ran five times for 42. Adam Alcorta, Levi Andrews, and Javante Anderson combined for another 31 yards.

The Bears moved the ball well at times during the game, but La Vernia was hurt by turnovers. The ball came loose four times for the Bears, three of which ended up in the hands of the Bulldogs.

The loss drops La Vernia to 1-4 on the year, and time is running out for the Bears to fix what isn’t right. La Vernia will be back at home this Friday, Oct. 5, to face Taylor. It will be the team’s final non-district game of the season before facing Pleasanton on Friday, Oct. 12. Kickoff for both games is set at 7:30 p.m. in Bear Stadium.
