BLOOMINGTON -- With the aid of a whopping 39 first-half points, the Poth Pirates earned a very convincing 51-6 win over the Bloomington Bobcats last Friday night to pick up their first District 15-2A DII win of the season.
Led by the running game of seniors Phillip Garza and Zach Lyssy, the Pirates found ways to score early and often last Friday night. The first touchdown came on a 33-yard run from Garza. Lyssy then joined in with a 37-yard sprint for 6. After Lyssy kicked the extra point, Garza added to the 13-0 first-quarter lead with a 25-yard touchdown run. Another Lyssy kick made it 20-0 in less than 12 minutes.
Sophomore running back Koby Pruski got in on the scoring action in the second quarter as he ran 36 yards for a score. The point-after attempt was no good, but Poth was in clear control of the game, leading 26-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, however, Bloomington’s Ruben Aguirre fielded the ball at the Bobcat 16-yard line, found a seam in the Pirate kick coverage, and returned the ball 84 yards for the score. The point-after attempt was no good, but the Bobcats were on the board, and the score stood at 26-6.
The Bloomington kick return would prove to be the only Bobcat score of the night, as the Pirate defense allowed next to nothing throughout the remainder of the game.
The Poth offense wasn’t done scoring on the night, though, far from it.
The Pirates scored their next touchdown of the game through the air, as Lyssy connected with Jerrek Hosek for an 18-yard touchdown. Garza then punched in his third rushing touchdown of the half from 2 yards out, and the Pirates took a monster 39-6 lead into the locker room.
The second half got a little better for the Bobcats as Poth began rotating in some less experienced players, but not before Garza earned his fourth rushing touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run. Sophomore Sean Clancy scored Poth’s final touchdown of the game with a 13-yard touchdown run. The point-after kick was no good, but it was Poth on top 51-6, a score that would prove final.
The Pirate defense absolutely dominated the Bobcats. Poth allowed Bloomington just 61 yards of total offense, and gave up just one first down. The Bobcats ran the ball 19 times for 57 yards, and completed just one pass for another 4.
On the other side of the ball, the Pirates did pretty much whatever they wanted, running the ball 50 times for 470 yards. Lyssy completed 2 of 4 passes for another 41 yards. The Pirates picked up 22 first downs during the game and were forced to punt only once.
Garza led the ground game with 214 yards on 19 carries, an average of more than 11 yards per carry. Pruski ran seven times for 77 yards, and Lyssy had eight carries for 55 yards. Clancy made the most of his 10 touches with 85 yards and the touchdown, while Thomas Krawietz had six rushes for 39 yards. Hosek had one catch for 18 yards and the score, and Krawietz had a catch for 23 yards.
With the win, the Pirates improve to 3-1 on the year, and start the district portion of their season at 1-0. Poth will be back at home this Friday, Oct. 5, as the Cotulla Cowboys head into town. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jack Lane Stadium.
