Dilley 25
Stockdale 18

STOCKDALE -- After a week off for a scheduled bye, the Stockdale football team was back in action last Friday night. Stockdale played well throughout most of the night, but the Brahmas struggled in the fourth quarter, giving up 13 points to the Dilley Wolves, and fell by the final score of 25-18.

After what was nearly a scoreless first quarter of play, the visiting Wolves broke the stalemate with a 5-yard touchdown run, as four ticks of the clock remained. The point-after attempt was no good, but Dilley led 6-0. On the ensuing kickoff, however, Josh Vela of Stockdale fielded the ball around the 20-yard line, and outran the Dilley defense 80 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the first. The conversion attempt by Stockdale failed, and the teams were tied at 6-6.

Dilley responded well, and the Wolves took their next drive down the field in two minutes to score on a Juan Cantu 11-yard run. The 2-point conversion attempt was no good.

A defensive struggle raged from there, as neither team was able to find the end zone again in the half. As the clock reached zero to mark the beginning of halftime, it was the visiting Wolves out front, 12-6.

Early in the third quarter of play, the Brahmas got rolling and tied things up again as Darion McMahan scored on a 1-yard run across the goal line. The 2-point conversion was no good, and the teams were tied at 12-all with 8:57 remaining in the third quarter.

As the third quarter began to wind down, Stockdale took its first lead of the night as Matt Valadez exploited an opening in the Dilley defense and raced 43 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point play fell short again, but it was Stockdale on top, 18-12 with 1:53 to play in the third.

Unfortunately for Stockdale, that was the end of their scoring. Dilley tied the game with 9:15 to play on a 60-yard passing play. The Wolves then went on top with 33 ticks remaining, as Orlando Bernal punched one in from a yard deep. Dilley kicked 1 extra point, and the final score stood at 25-18 in favor of the Wolves.

The Brahmas posted a total of 305 yards of offense on the night, gaining 244 yards on the ground and 61 through the air. Valadez handled most of the heavy lifting for Stockdale, carrying the ball 21 times for 207 yards on the night. Dusty Mosier added 32 yards on 10 carries, and Vela and McMahan each had 5 yards as well.

Jacob Cardenas completed 4 of 8 passing attempts for 31 yards. Mosier completed 1 of 2 passes for another 30 yards. Tanner Maxwell was the Brahmas’ leading receiver with 30 yards, followed by Valadez with 27, and Vela with a catch for 4 yards.

With the loss, the Brahmas fall to 2-2 on the year, and are now 0-1 in District 15-2A DII.

The Brahmas will travel to Natalia this Friday, Oct. 5, to face the Mustangs. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
