Dollar General stores coming to Adkins, Elmendorf
Construction of a Dollar General store at the intersection of U.S. 181 and Kilowatt Road in Elmendorf nears completion. The store is set to open later this month, according to a company spokesman.
In addition to milder temperatures, October means the opening of two new Dollar General stores in the Wilson County News’ coverage area.
In Adkins, a new store had its grand opening Oct. 6 at 11939 U.S. 87, which is just inside Loop 1604. According to Dollar General Corp. spokesman Emily Weiss, the store has an area of approximately 9,000 square feet. Like other stores in the chain, it will employ six to 10 employees. The workers will be a mix of full and part time, she said.
Opening later this month is a Dollar General store at the corner of Kilowatt Road and U.S. 181 in Elmendorf. The new Dollar General store is one of several changes coming to Elmendorf. See related article in an upcoming issue.
This Elmendorf store, on which construction is nearing completion, will have similar dimensions to the Adkins store, Weiss said. A firm opening date was not available as of press time Oct 8.
Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General Corp. has more than 10,000 locations in 40 states. It continues to be a familiar sight throughout Texas, where the 73-year-old retailer has approximately 1,100 stores. “We strive to provide convenience and value to our customers,” Weiss said. “The typical Dollar General store serves an area of 3 to 5 miles. For most of our customers, it’s no more than a 10-minute drive to get to a Dollar General.”
Upon opening the Adkins and Elmendorf stores, Dollar General will have 10 stores in the area. The others are located in:
•San Antonio: 10940 South U.S. 181 (next to Greenway Grocery on South Presa Street).
•San Antonio: 6102 U.S. 87 E. (between South Foster Road and Loop 410).
•Floresville: 540 10th St. (U.S. 181).
•Karnes City: 705 East Calvert Ave. (U.S. 181 Business).

“We’re proud to be part of the community in South Central Texas,” Weiss said. “We strive to serve our customers well every day.”
In addition to being a small-box discount retailer, Dollar General also gives back to its communities by participating in several charitable programs. Aside from providing space in its stores for local organizations to collect items for annual toy drives, Dollar General Corp. plans to donate $100,000 this year to Toys for Tots.
The company also aids adults in obtaining General Education Diplomas and has established the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which awards grants for public and school libraries. More about this program can be found at http://dgliteracy.org.
