1916-2012

On Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, James Edward “Jimmy” Flora, a man of honor, a patriot, a Christian, a father with a soft heart, a husband with a twinkle in his eye, a storyteller with a song for every occasion, a soldier tested in battle, and a self-made man, went home to his reward. Jimmy was born Oct. 9, 1916.

He overcame the terrible hunger of the Depression and the horrors of the Battle of the Bulge to become the loving husband of Eda “Doris” Tipton of Floresville. They celebrated their 70th anniversary on March 1, 2012. Jimmy joined the Army at an early age, serving in the First Cavalry (horse calvary) at Fort Clark in Brackettville, Texas. He was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, and ultimately received a Bronze Star for service to his country in the European Theater in World War II. Jimmy was a long-time dedicated employee at Sears & Roebuck, Romana Plaza, in the air-conditioning, plumbing, and heating department. After retiring, he worked for Montgomery Ward for 11 years. He was also a deacon at the Baptist church and a Sunday school teacher to many young men who grew up at Riverside Baptist Church.

Jimmy was a loving husband to Doris Flora; an exemplary father to Patty Gail, Brenda Sue, and Cliff; and a doting grandfather and great-grandfather. A thoughtful and conscientious man, Jimmy voted in the 2008 presidential primary and election on electronic voting machines at the age of 91 -- a long way from the poll-tax voting of the 1930s. Jimmy’s accomplishments, honor, and kindness touched many. He will live on in the hearts of the loving family he built and all those who knew him, always, said his family.

The family wishes to thank Pastor Gary Bradley; Dr. Michael Lichtenstein; caretaker and all-around helper Maria Martinez; Christus Santa Rosa Hospice workers Kimberly Uriegar, Karen Helton, Nancy McMillan, Bertha Gonzales, Jo Ann Bossell, and Chaplain Mario Rodriguez; and irreplaceable caretakers from Griswold Home Care, Joanne Sanchez, Linda Almaguer, Andrea Ortega, and Emma de la Rosa.

Jimmy is survived by his wife; children Patricia Sitchler and husband Alvin, Brenda Sue Dunn and husband Larry, and James Clifton Flora; grandchildren Kristen Eve Sitchler, Jason Sitchler and wife Alexis, Jonathan Dunn and wife Kristen, and Joel, Angela, and Bethany Dunn; and great-grandchild Isaac James Sitchler.
