FLORESVILLE -- It may have relocated to San Antonio, but the Team Morones Boxing Club still has roots in Floresville, and the organization will be back in town during this year’s Peanut Festival to celebrate its recent success.

After reaching a point of unsustainability, the gym once located on B Street in Floresville closed its doors during the summer of 2010. Owner Rick Morones and his son, Rick Jr., never gave up on their dream, though; they just had to put things on hold. As it turned out, the wait wasn’t very long, and the pair soon found another facility in San Antonio. They reopened the Team Morones Boxing Club, and things have never been better.

Over the past two years, Rick Jr. has made quite a name for himself as a trainer, and the Team Morones Boxing Club now houses 11 professional fighters. Two of the men making waves across the sport are Quinton Whitaker and Joseph Rios.

Rios is currently ranked No. 3 in the world, and captured the WBC USNBC World Title last month in California. Morones said Rios came to the gym after suffering two straight losses, and has won his last two fights, including his world title, while fighting for Team Morones.

Whitaker has found great success in the Morones camp, and is the Texas Title holder. In addition, Whitaker recently won the NABU Intercontinental Title.

“Things are going really well for us,” Rick Jr. said. “We have been all over the country. We were on ESPN, HBO, and Showtime. The word is spreading and our guys are boxing really well.”

Rios, Whitaker, and Rick Jr., as well as others from the Team Morones Boxing Club, will be part of the Peanut Festival Parade this Saturday, Oct. 13, and will then make themselves available afterward for photos and autographs.

“It’s going to be fun,” Rick Jr. said. “We were asked to be part of the Peanut Festival and we will be there. We haven’t forgotten about Floresville and we won’t let Floresville forget about us.”

Team Morones Boxing Club is located at 2108 Quintana Road in San Antonio.

For more information on the gym, the fighters, or tickets for upcoming events, call 210-387-6859 or 210-427-0260.
