Volleyball teams near end of district season
After more than two months of hard work and play, the regular season is nearing its end for the area’s six high school volleyball teams. The teams have each made it halfway through their respective district schedules, and a playoff picture is beginning to develop.
In Class 5A, the East Central Lady Hornets are living on the edge with a District 28-5A mark of 2-3. That puts East Central in the fourth and final playoff spot, as of press time, with one more round of district matches left on the schedule.
Corpus Christi Carroll and Steele find themselves in a tie for first place with records of 4-1, while Southwest is holding down the third-place spot with a district mark of 3-2.
The Floresville Jaguars have been an interesting team to watch over the course of the 2012 season, as the Class 4A team has shown steady and marked improvement since beginning play way back on Aug. 14. The Jags went into the District 29-4A portion of their schedule with a sub-500 record, but turned up the heat and have rattled off a string of nine straight wins, including six in straight sets.
The Jags should cruise into the playoffs with no problem, and currently lead Uvalde (8-1) by one match. Medina Valley and Harlandale are tied for third with district records of 5-4.
In Class 3A, the La Vernia Lady Bears have been state-ranked since the first serve of the first match in 2012. And while they have taken a short slide in the rankings, it remains clear that the Lady Bears intend on making a good run through the playoffs and toward a state title.
Midway through the district season, La Vernia stands at 5-0 in District 28-3A play, one game above Somerset, and two ahead of Pleasanton. If the Lady Bears maintain this level of play, they should once again claim ownership to the district title, and then take advantage of a bye week during the first round of playoff competition.
The area’s Class 2A teams found themselves in an extremely tough district this season. Poth, Stockdale, and Nixon-Smiley were all back together this year, but were lumped in with Karnes City, Luling, Schulenburg, and Hallettsville. With only three playoff spots available, it’s a tight race in District 28-2A, to say the least.
The Poth Pirettes didn’t return many players this season, and the youth and inexperience was apparent early in the year. The girls are getting better with each game, though, and as of press time, were tied for first place with Schulenburg, as each team had one loss. Hallettsville is just a game back, however, with two losses.
While the Pirettes pulled off a terrific comeback to hand the Lady Horns of Schulenburg their first and only district loss thus far, Hallettsville stunned the Pirettes to give Poth its first loss. Schulenburg beat Hallettsville twice.
It is going to be close heading into the final district matches of the year, but the district title could be decided this Saturday, Oct. 13, as the Pirettes travel to Schulenburg for a rematch.
For Stockdale, the 2012 season has seen its ups and downs. The team has a number of sophomores on the roster, and there has been some adjustment for everyone on the floor.
The Lady Brahmas are currently just outside of the playoff picture, as they sit in a tie with Karnes City for fourth place, as of press time. The two were scheduled to face each other Oct. 9, however.
The Lady Mustangs of Nixon-Smiley are just a game behind Stockdale and Karnes City, and would need to win out to have a shot at the postseason. As of press time, the games remaining on the schedule for the Lady Mustangs were Poth, Stockdale, Hallettsville, and Karnes City.
