Town East Eagles win big, use Mercy rule to stop play
Town East 87
New Life 38
The Town East Eagles ended a two-game losing streak by defeating the New Life Eagles, 87-38. The game was halted midway through the third quarter because of the 45-point mercy rule.
Town East got on the scoreboard early, as Dante Johnson took the opening kickoff 50 yards for a touchdown. New Life was able to tie up the score with just over two minutes gone in the first. On the next possession, Johnson took Town East’s first play from scrimmage and rumbled 60 yards for another score. The first quarter saw Town East put up 33 points to New Life’s 19. Tim Muenzler scored twice, while Johnson did it three times.
The second quarter saw Muenzler and Johnson continue to dominate from the offensive side of the ball. Muenzler added one more score, while Johnson was able to punch it in one time as well. Town East also added a defensive touchdown to the mix, thanks to an interception by Tyler Smith, who then lateraled the ball to Johnson, who then took it the rest of the way for the score. Town East led 52-32 at the half.
Town East was able to catch its breath at halftime and to regain some focus. The team came out and completely dominated the third quarter. Town East took the second-half kickoff and quickly marched down the field, eventually scoring as Muenzler put it in from 31 yards out. He would later add runs of 54 and 18 yards for touchdowns, as well as a 3-yard pass reception for a touchdown. Johnson would put two in from 38 and 31 yards out. Town East outscored New Life 35-6 in the quarter, thanks in large part to the inspired defensive effort of Muenzler, who had 17 tackles on the evening. Johnson chipped in eight tackles, Caleb Ceasor and Matthew Smith contributed six tackles each, Smith was in on three tackles, and Arthur Lomas assisted on one tackle.
For the evening, Town East was led in rushing by sophomore Johnson who ran 14 times for 275 yards. Muenzler ran 15 times for 133 yards, and Ceasor had two carries for 3 yards. Smith completed four passes on the evening with one of them going to his brother, Matthew, for 21 yards. Lomas caught one pass for 3 yards, Muenzler caught one for 3 yards and a touchdown, and Johnson caught one for 26 yards.
“We had two boys out sick this past week so we weren’t able to get a lot of work done,” Town East Head Coach Robert Davis said. “Two of the boys had to play while still recovering from their mid-week illness. When you only have six boys on the team, sometimes you just have to suck it up and play even when you don’t feel like it.
“This [win] was a step in the right direction,” Davis added. “It’s nice to get that taste of defeat out of our mouths!”
Town East improves to 3-2 with the win, and will play Austin NYOS this Friday, Oct. 12, beginning at 7 p.m. at Wiseman field. It is Homecoming for the Eagles.
