Stockale Brahma running game too much for Natalia
NATALIA -- Thanks in part to big rushing games from Matt Valadez and Dusty Mosier, the Stockdale Brahma football team had no trouble with the Natalia Mustangs last Friday night, and returned home with a big 48-14 win.
The Brahmas scored early and often in Natalia, putting 21 points on the board in the first quarter alone. Valadez scored his first of three touchdowns less than two minutes into the game on a 1-yard run across the goal line. Trey Jordan kicked the extra point, and it was 7-0 very early on. Then, with 6:58 to play in the first, Valadez scored again on an 8-yard carry. Less than five minutes later, it was touchdown No. 3 for Valadez with a 2-yard scamper into the end zone. Jordan completed one of the two extra-point attempts, and it was Stockdale out in front 20-0 with two minutes to play in the first.
On the Mustangs’ next possession, however, Natalia finally got on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run. The point-after attempt was no good, and with 11 minutes to play in the half, it was Stockdale still in control, 20-6.
The defensive units for each team stiffened from there, and possession went back and forth without another score. As the buzzer marked the end of the first half, it was Stockdale with a 20-6 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Brahmas wasted little time following halftime, and scored their first touchdown of the second half in less than one minute of play. Mosier finished things off for the Brahmas with a 14-yard run to the end zone. Jordan’s kick was good, and Stockdale enjoyed a 27-6 lead.
After a couple of exchanges, senior Darion McMahan got in on the scoring action for Stockdale with a nice 4-yard run for a touchdown. Jordan made it four out of five kicking the ball, and the score was 34-6 with just under three minutes to play in the third.
A big defensive stop for Stockdale gave the ball back to the Brahma offense, and junior Deryk Mayberry scored on a 4-yard run with 10:48 to play in the game. Jordan kicked the extra point, and the score was quickly 41-6 in favor of Stockdale.
Natalia added to its total with a scoring drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run. The Mustangs were also successful on their 2-point conversion, but with little more than seven minutes remaining in the game, Stockdale was in control with a 41-14 advantage.
The Brahmas went into clock-management mode, but still managed to add to their lead. With 49 seconds remaining on the clock, Mosier ran in from 3 yards out for another 6 points. Jordan kicked the extra point, and the final score stood at 48-14.
Valadez finished the game with 158 yards rushing on 23 carries. Mosier had 127 yards on 10 carries, and McMahan added 64 yards on 12 touches. Mayberry ran for 36 yards, Josh Vela had 17, and quarterback Jacob Cardenas ended the night with 1 yard of rushing offense. Cardenas completed five of 10 passing attempts for 35 yards. Valadez had three catches for 24 yards, and Mosier had 2 receptions for 11 yards.
The Stockdale defense allowed the Mustangs to complete just 10 of 28 passing attempts, and intercepted Natalia’s quarterback twice. The Mustangs managed less than 4 yards per carry on the ground, as the Brahmas held Natalia to 93 yards of rushing on 25 attempts. Stockdale forced two fumbles and recovered one.
The win puts the Brahmas at 3-2 on the year, and 1-1 in District 15-2A DII play. Stockdale will travel down the road to Nixon this Friday, Oct. 12, as the Brahmas take on the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs. Nixon-Smiley is currently 0-5, and is coming off a 41-15 loss to Dilley. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
