Marvin Roemer will be the 2012 Floresville Peanut Festival Parade grand marshal, and he has a very definite connection to peanuts. In the late 1800s, his paternal grandparents, Harry and Ida Pfeiffer Roemer, settled on Jackson Gulch in the Calaveras community in what is now Wilson County just north of Floresville. The Roemer family continued to farm peanuts, with Marvin maintaining the tradition until 1990.

Off the farm, Marvin worked from 1969-78 for the Warnken family and Wilco Seed. In 1976, due to Marvin’s actual experience in harvesting peanuts, he was able to represent Wilco in Guatemala in assisting farmers with their peanut harvesting. In 1990, Marvin went back to work for Wilco full time, and is currently employed as plant supervisor at this business, which continues to process peanuts which are shipped worldwide. Marvin, a member of the Wilson County Peanut Growers Association, served as its secretary and president.

He joined the Texas Army National Guard and the National Guard in 1967, and during his third activation, he was stationed in Kosovo for “Enduring Freedom” in 2005-06. Today, he is a member of the VFW Post 8555 in Poth.

Marvin became a member of the Floresville Volunteer Fire Department (FVFD) and served as secretary, treasurer, Peanut Festival Parade chairman, City Fire Marshal under Chief Hurvey Elliott, and assistant chief. Marvin was a member of the Guadalupe Firemen and Fire Marshals Association. In 2005, he retired from the fire department after 35 years of service.

In 1970, the FVFD responded to a vehicle accident where serious injuries were involved, but Floresville, at that time, had no local ambulance service. This accident seemed to be the catalyst for change. Nine people met and worked to charter the Wilson County Volunteer Ambulance Association (WCVAA) in June 1971; Marvin was one of the charter members. Marvin physically helped construct the first Emergency Medical Services garage across the street from the hospital next to the fire department. The WCVAA was eventually able to replace that original building with their larger, current home at the same location. Marvin served as maintenance officer, vice president, and president of the WCVAA. He is a certified EMT, and was an instructor for many years. After more than 40 years, Marvin is the only original member still participating in the WCVAA, and remains on the schedule as a volunteer.

Marvin married his wife, Molly, in 1969, and they are members of Floresville’s First Lutheran Church.

Marvin is a member of the Texas Farm Bureau and served a term on the Wilson County Show Barn committee.

Marvin served on the Peanut Festival board of directors, became vice president, and in 1975 was elected president of the association. Marvin was also chosen to be Prime Minister in 1978 for Queen Peggy Gorden.

It possibly seems that Marvin might not have had the time, but he has raised two daughters -- Sarah and Christine -- now both grown and married. You might say he also raised a “queen peanut” in that Sarah was Queen Tunaep in 1994.

Just a note to emphasize Marvin’s diversity: He played a deputy in the movie “The Big Brawl,” and was a security guard in “The Great Waldo Pepper,” two movies that have been filmed in Floresville.
