Candidates' Forum: David M. Williams, Republican
Candidate for: MEMBER, STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION, DIST. 3
As a God-fearing father, a grandfather, veteran, educator, and taxpayer, the number one issue I will face if elected is the need to respond to the crisis of values that is expanding in our nation as well as our schools.
America became, and still is, a world leader due to its Judeo-Christian values of faith, the traditional family, patriotism, morality, and hard work. Education shapes the future by instilling or suppressing these values in students today.
Developing an educational climate and standards that promote these long-standing values of American exceptionalism will be a top priority. I believe that education is first the responsibility of parents who choose how their children will be educated. They share this responsibility with schools that assist them in teaching skills (academic, athletic, the arts) beyond their capability.
Since parents are the ultimate authority (not the state) for their children, options must be available such as U.S. Constitution-supporting charter schools and no-strings-attached tax credits or vouchers.
