Eagle Ford: Economic group works to close abandoned oil wells
STOCKDALE -- The directors of the Stockdale Economic Development Corp. (SEDC) have focused again on the proper closures of abandoned wells within the city’s industrial park; this topic was addressed during their Oct. 10 meeting.
According to SEDC President Frank Bain Jr. after the meeting, the directors continue to explore methods for the closure of the six to nine oil wells abandoned in the 1970s or early ’80s.
These abandoned wells have been a stumbling block for selling sites within the park and the red tape to close one well is overwhelming, Bain said.
Among the steps to be taken, Bain explained, is obtaining the history of each abandoned well using Texas Railroad Commission reports. This is followed by a water quality review, so as to protect the water-bearing sands and gravels in the area.
Bain said the SEDC is diligently working to plug these wells properly, so they can market the acreage available in the industrial park, without the potential to hurt the organization.
Also during the meeting, the directors:
•Adopted their fiscal year 2012-13 mission statement, to be forwarded to the city council.
•Heard a report from SEDC Director Ginger Coleman on the establishment of an online directory of Stockdale businesses.
•Heard an update from Stockdale City Manager Banks Akin on the status of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development infrastructure loan for the city. The bidding process is anticipated by the end of the year.
