In the story about Mildred Van Treese, it was mentioned that her grandfather was Texas hero John Himes Livergood. And there were a couple of other stories that involved the black cat, Scooter, and good friend, Brenda. Who would ever have thought that there would be discovered a connection!

Brenda and Henry, Franklin and I became great friends in the mid 60’s when we each moved into South Bexar County. Subsequently, we had our children at about the same time, attended the same church, played cards and went out to eat and made other friends together. Then in the early 70’s, they moved to Pleasanton.

Joining a small church there, Brenda and Henry made friends with an older couple, Marvin and Francis Matthews. Through the course of time, they discovered they were related, as Marvin learned that Brenda’s maternal great grandmother and his grandmother were sisters! Small world. But it gets smaller.

Marvin Matthews mentioned one day that he had lost a nephew to a private plane crash in the late 60’s there in Pleasanton. That rang a bell with Brenda, and upon further inquiry, she discovered that Marvin’s nephew was Lloyd Van Treese. “Why,” she exclaimed, “That was my best friend’s uncle!” And if that were so, and since she and Marvin Matthews were related, then she and her friend must be related!

So right away, Brenda called me up and said, “Hello, Cousin.” Huh? What? Cousin? “What are you talking about?” I asked. So, Brenda explained, and there it is. Brenda’s great great grandparents and my great great grandparents were both John Himes and Sarah Livergood! My grandmother’s mother, Phynetta, and Brenda’s grandmother’s mother, Louisa, were sisters! (I have an older cousin who remembers visiting that Aunt Louisa.) So from then on, we claimed to be fifth cousins! However, upon researching the official degrees, or levels, of cousinship, I have learned that we are legally third cousins--two people who share a great, great, grand parent. How ‘bout that?
