The Sonshine Ark Preschool and Daycare will celebrate its 20-year anniversary with an Open House on Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to noon in the facility at 1406 Sixth St. in Floresville.

With vision and prayers, the First Lutheran Church saw the need for a quality preschool and day-care center in Floresville. On Jan. 1, 1992, Sonshine Ark Preschool and Daycare opened with an enrollment of nine. The center began in the old parsonage located next to the church. The year ended with an enrollment of 32 and the fellowship house was opened to accommodate more children. The church built the new educational addition in 1997. Upon completion in July, Sonshine Ark was able to combine all the classes under one roof.

Currently, the center has received the Early Childhood Accreditation from the Evangelical Lutheran Edu-cation Association and is licensed by the state of Texas for attendance of 125 children. The staff consists of 26 employees, including Vickie Rodgers, who has served as director since February 1994.

Sonshine Ark strives to promote this ministry of First Lutheran Church in the community with the following mission statement: To reach the people with the good news of Jesus Christ, build up the total ministry of First Lutheran Church, and provide a safe, nurturing environment for children.

The children and staff frequently visit the residents of the Floresville Nursing Center, enjoy story hour at the Sam Fore Jr. Wilson County Public Library, and attend weekly “chapel” in the First Lutheran Church sanctuary. In addition, they have participated in fund-raisers for charitable organizations such as St. Jude’s Hospital, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy.

Sonshine Ark is providing many families in Floresville and Wilson County with a loving, Christian preschool and day care, and hopes to remain an important part of families’ lives for years to come.
