Stockdale 34
Nixon-Smiley 7

NIXON -- After touchdowns from each team early in the first quarter, it appeared as if it was going to be a back-and-forth battle throughout the night. In the end, however, it turned out to be a dominating performance by the Stockdale Brahmas, as they secured a 34-7 win over the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs.

The Brahmas got things rolling on the night, scoring their first of five touchdowns less than 90 seconds into the first quarter. Junior running back Matt Valadez took the ball from the Stockdale 44-yard line and raced 56 yards for a touchdown. Travis Covington added the point-after kick, and it was a 7-0 lead.

The advantage didn’t last long, though, as Nixon-Smiley took just two and a half minutes to score on a 28-yard run by sophomore Tristan Newman. Oscar Torres booted the point-after, and things were all tied up at 7-7.

The first-quarter scoring wasn’t over, and Stockdale went back on the offense. The Brahmas got the go-ahead score as Valadez ran in from 8 yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the game. Covington added the extra point, and Stockdale went up 14-7, a lead they would never relinquish.

Early in the second quarter, Stockdale’s passing game paid dividends, as quarterback Jacob Cardenas connected with Josh Vela for 90 yards and a touchdown. The Covington kick made it 21-7 with 9:35 to play in the half. Later in the second quarter, with just 1:21 to play, Cardenas and Vela reconnected for 7 yards and another Brahma touchdown. The point-after kick was no good, but Stockdale had extended its lead to 27-7.

The final score of the game came with 3:51 to play in the third quarter as Dusty Mosier broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run. Covington’s kick was on the mark, and the board read 34-7, a score that would prove final.

Other than its first drive of the game, Nixon-Smiley struggled throughout the night to get its offense rolling. The Mustangs completed just one of 10 passing attempts for 7 yards. Nixon-Smiley is a running team, though, and did manage 193 rushing yards on 42 carries. The team struggled to hold onto the ball throughout the night, though, fumbling four times, and losing two of them to end Mustang drives.

Newman led the Nixon-Smiley rushing attack with 96 yards on 18 carries, followed by Jared Van Auken with 32 yards, Miguel Hernandez with 30 yards, and Nick Pena with another 20. Garrett Earlywine had the team’s one catch of 7 yards.

On the other side of the ball, the Brahmas used a mix of run and pass options en route to a 480-yard performance. Stockdale ran 35 times for 306 yards on the ground, while adding another 174 yards through the air on five completions. Valadez led the Brahma running game with 139 yards on 12 carries, followed by Mosier with 67 yards on six carries. Deryk Mayberry added 44 yards, Darion McMahan ran for 30 yards, and Christian Segura carried twice for 20 yards. Cardenas completed five of 11 passing attempts, hitting Vela three times for 122 yards and a touchdown. He connected with Miguel Marquez for 28 yards, and with Mosier for 24 yards.

With the win, the Brahmas improve to 4-2 on the year and 2-1 in District 15-2A DII play. The Mustangs fall to 0-6 on the year and 0-3 in district.

The Mustangs will be at home again this Friday, Oct. 19, as the team celebrates Homecoming against Bloomington. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Stockdale will also be at home this week, as the Brahmas host the Poth Pirates in what is always a physical game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bobby Russell Field.
