LA VERNIA -- The Town East Eagles celebrated their Homecoming game last Friday night with a convincing 48-0 win over the Jaguars from Austin NYOS. The Eagles totally dominated the game on both sides of the ball, holding the Jaguars to just two first downs for the entire game.

Dante Johnson got the Eagles on the scoreboard first with a 6-yard romp on the third play from scrimmage. Town East was able to get the ball back quickly with Tyler Smith intercepting a pass, his fourth of the season. Johnson was then able to take a screen pass from Smith 27 yards for his second touchdown of the quarter. He wasn’t done yet, though, as the Eagles were able to force the Jaguars to punt on their next possession and Johnson quickly took the punt 60 yards for his third touchdown of the quarter.

Town East’s defense again forced NYOS to give up the ball on downs, but this time Town East used Tim Muenzler to carry the ball. Muenzler was able to move the Eagle offense effectively, and just before the first quarter ended, he punched it in from 14 yards out to put Town East up by a score of 26-0.

The Jaguars came out in the second quarter with a little more fight. They were able to manage a couple of first downs in the quarter, but the Eagle defense stiffened both times to deny a score. Meanwhile, the Eagle offense chugged right along no matter who was carrying the ball. Caleb Ceasor was able to score two touchdowns in the quarter from 21 and 8 yards out. Town East went into halftime with a 42-0 lead.

During the halftime festivities, Muenzler, a senior, was crowned Homecoming King and senior Sarah Rodriguez was crowned Homecoming Queen.

The game ended by the 45-point mercy rule early in the third quarter when Johnson took a screen pass from Smith and went the distance for a 12-yard touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, Muenzler totaled 16 tackles, his third straight game with at least 16 tackles. Dante Johnson added 11 tackles, Matt Smith racked up five, and his younger brother, Tyler, tallied four. Ceasor and Arthur Lomas each registered two tackles.

On the offensive side of the ball, Johnson rushed four times for 61 yards and one touchdown, Muenzler ran eight times for 74 yards and one touchdown, and Ceasor carried the ball seven times for 47 yards and two touchdowns. Smith went 2 for 2 throwing the ball for 39 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson also threw one pass that was completed for 23 yards. Lomas caught one pass for 23 yards and Johnson caught two for 39 yards and two touchdowns.

This Friday, Town East, now 4-2 on the year, travels to Fredericksburg to take on Heritage Academy at 7:30 p.m. Heritage is the reigning TAPPS six-man state champs, and they look like they might be on their way to another state championship with a 6-1 record.

“We are gonna have to play our best game of the year to beat these guys,” Town East Head Coach Robert Davis said. “I feel real confident that we can get the job done. It won’t be easy, but that’s the way I like it. This game will be a real barometer of where we are.”
