CORPUS CHRISTI -- Behind a Johnathan Jackson-led rushing game, the East Central Hornets opened district play last Thursday evening with a big 43-14 win over Corpus Christi Carroll.
The Hornets got the scoring under way early in the first quarter, as Christian Jones ran in from a yard out. Evan Moreno then ran in for 2 points on the conversion, and it was an 8-0 lead for the Hornets with 10:35 still left to play in the first.
The Hornets completed just four passes on the night, but three went for East Central touchdowns. The first came at the 4:06 mark of the first quarter as Christian Jones connected with Brett Casey for 23 yards and 6 points. The point-after attempt was no good, but the Hornets led 14-0, an advantage they would carry into the second quarter.
With 4:24 left to play in the half, Jeremy Jones connected with Dustin Toscano for a 12-yard touchdown. Less than two minutes later, the duo hooked up again, this time for 17 yards and a touchdown. Justin Organ ran in one of the point-after attempts for 2 points, and the Hornet lead was 28-0.
Carroll finally got on the board as time expired in the first half. The Tigers used a passing play of their own, and scored from 11 yards out. The point-after kick was good, and East Central took a 28-7 lead into halftime.
Following the break, East Central picked up where it left off, and the Hornets scored their fifth touchdown of the night on a Gray Gonzales 5-yard run. Christian Jones carried in the 2-point conversion, and it was a 36-7 lead for the Black and Gold. Five minutes later, Jackson capped off another Hornet drive with a 1-yard run over the goal line. Dalton Zigman booted the extra point, and East Central celebrated a 43-7 advantage.
The Carroll Tigers managed one additional score with less than a minute to play in the third quarter, but never posed a serious threat to East Central. Both teams were scoreless in the fourth, but it was of little consequence, as the Hornets cruised to a 43-14 victory and a 1-0 record in District 28-5A.
East Central’s defense held Carroll to only 179 yards of total offense, allowing just 11 first downs, and forcing seven punts. Meanwhile, the Hornet offense doubled that effort, racking up 399 yards of offense and earning 22 first downs.
Jackson led the East Central running game with 147 yards on 13 carries. Jeremy Jones ran for 54 yards, Javion Polk had eight carries for 43 yards, Christian Jones ran for 30 yards, and Jacorey Armstrong added another 29 yards on six carries. Jeremy Jones completed three passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Christian Jones completed one pass for 23 yards and a touchdown. Toscano caught all three passes from Jeremy Jones, and Casey had the reception from Christian.
The win lifts the Hornets to 4-2 on the year and 1-0 in district play. East Central will play again this Thursday, Oct. 18, as the Hornets host the Southwest Dragons on television’s Thursday Night Lights. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hornet Stadium.
