Tigers blow out memorial for Homecoming win
Ruben Benavides looks for more yardage upfield during
Floresville’s face-off with the Minutemen for Homecoming.
FLORESVILLE -- It was a sweet Homecoming indeed last Friday night for the Floresville Tigers at Eschenburg Field as they pounded the Memorial Minutemen 49-8.
It was all Tigers the entire night as the Minutemen seemed to have no answer for Floresville on either side of the ball.
The Tiger defense, which held Memorial scoreless for nearly three quarters of play, was as stingy as ever, only allowing 104 yards of total offense.
Ruben Benavides got the Tigers on the scoreboard first with 6:28 remaining in the first quarter on a 28-yard scamper for a touchdown. The other facet in the dual rushing threat of the Tiger offense, Hector Villegas, would add another touchdown just over a minute later. An Esteban Mireles kick would put the Tigers ahead 14-0 by the end of the first quarter.
From there, the Memorial defense appeared to become overwhelmed as the big offensive line of Floresville dominated their defenders.
Villegas would score again in the second quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run. He would be joined by Kyle Bippert, who scored on a 2-yard run to put the Tigers up 28-0 at the half.
After halftime, it was more of the same ground-and-pound scheme that had been bringing the Tigers success all night.
Benavides got his second taste of the end zone with 8:13 left in the third quarter. Both he and Villegas recorded a pair of touchdowns against Memorial.
As the Tigers’ lead grew, Head Coach Jeff Luna began to rest some of his starters, but that still didn’t stifle the powerful Floresville offense.
Xavier Lara rushed for a 6-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter. He and Travis Tieken would both rush for 52 yards on the night.
Memorial finally got on the board with 3:50 left in the third quarter with a 32-yard run.
Quarterback Colby Shodrock punched one into the end zone himself, as he scored with 8:37 remaining in the fourth on a 1-yard rush.
The Tigers ran the ball a total of 46 times for a total of 354 yards and seven touchdowns. Villegas led the way with 121 yards on 15 carries, and Benavides added 120 yards on 12 touches. John Huber had the Tigers’ lone catch of the game that was good for 11 yards, and also made Floresville’s one interception of the game, which he returned for 30 yards.
The Tigers picked up 24 first downs on the night, never needing to punt the ball away. Memorial, on the other hand, picked up just eight first downs, lost two fumbles, and punted the ball away four times.
Luna said his team got a good win, but mistakes were made.
“This was a good win for the kids, but we made a lot of mistakes,” Luna said. “We were able to beat Memorial, but we need to fix those things going forward if we are going to continue playing at a high level. Our kids did good executing, but there are things we need to work on. We have Uvalde next week, and they are a good football team.”
The Tigers are now 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in District 29-4A. The unbeaten mark puts Floresville alone atop the district standings, though four tough games still await them. The Tigers will travel to Uvalde this week to take on the Coyotes at Honey Bowl Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
