Poth Girl Scouts enjoy dude ranch
Courtney, Payton, Braelyn, Catherine, and Sarah take the scenic route while riding horses.
Seven girls from Troop 2532 in Poth traveled to Bandera on the Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 6-8, to stay at the Dixie Dude Ranch. Five junior and two cadette Girl Scouts earned their horseback riding badges as they learned and demonstrated basic riding skills.
On the way to Bandera on Saturday, the Scouts stopped for lunch at the Hill Country State Natural Area, where they met their first horse of the weekend, whose owner was riding in the park and stopped at the girls’ picnic table. The girls already had “horse fever” as they traveled the remaining few miles to the ranch.
An hour after arriving, the Scouts had their first opportunity to ride and enjoyed two horseback rides a day until they had to return home on Monday. The trails led them all over the 100-year-old Hill Country ranch. The ranch also served three home-cooked meals a day and had live music, an outdoor barbecue, a hayride, and marshmallows by the campfire Saturday night.
Badge requirements included learning to mount, dismount, start, stop, steer, and maintain balance on a horse. The Scouts also watched a farrier shoe horses at the ranch. At their troop meetings, the girls have been learning about the care and maintenance required by horses, and they have also learned about horseback riding equipment. They asked the wranglers “20 questions” every ride and learned even more about horses.
The troop would like to thank all of those who supported cookie sales and their bake sales in September, which earned them the money for this great experience. They would also like to thank the ranch staff for making their stay memorable.
