FALLS CITY -- Both the delinquent tax attorney and the auditor for the Falls City Independent School District (ISD) are praising the district’s fiscal responsibility.

During his presentation to the district’s board of trustees at its Oct. 17 meeting, attorney John Banks of Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott‚ LLP praised Falls City ISD’s residents for their diligence in paying their property taxes. Banks said that the district only has a base total of $11,472.80 in delinquent taxes. He also said that of that total, $7,492 -- approximately two-thirds -- had just been submitted.

Even better news came during a presentation about the 2011-12 financial audit. Accountant Cameron L. “Cam” Gulley said he gave the Falls City ISD a “clean” opinion, expressing no concerns about the district’s bookkeeping practices.

Gulley did, however, caution the district to start preparing for the possibility of full recapture of its property- tax revenues, due to rising surpluses related to surging land values within the Eagle Ford shale play.

“Just because you have it in the bank today, that’s not to say that in a year the state’s not going to want it back,” he said.

For example, Gulley said, Karnes City ISD’s property values have surpassed $2 billion. As a result, the district is anticipating sending $20 million to Austin next year.

“Falls City could get into the same boat,” he said.

The district also received kudos from D’Hanis High School cheerleader Morgan Lynch, who mailed a letter to Falls City ISD Superintendent Linda Bettin and the school board, commending the district for the hospitality and good sportsmanship of Falls City’s football players and cheerleaders. A copy of the letter was included in the board members’ document packets prior to the board meeting.

In other business, the board:

•Accepted a bid for an oil lease from Marathon Oil, which will pay the district $5,000 per acre with 25 percent of all royalties, for the lease of 1.456 acres of district-owned property.

•Voted to reschedule the November board meeting to Nov. 14.

•Learned that seven people have applied for the new principal’s position at the Luther Thomas Elementary School. Among them, Bettin said, are two current district employees.

***In attendance: Board members Raymond Dziuk, Mindy Jendrusch, Eddie Bordovsky, Alfie Kowalik, Jerry Jendrusch, and Patrick Jarzombek; Falls City ISD Superintendent Linda Bettin, Superintendent’s Secretary Terri Crawford, and Principal Christi Blocker.
